  1. Containment problems at a coastal storage of obsolete pesticides in Denmark Maiken Faurbye September 29th 2016 SOIL TECHNOLOGIES

  2. Content of presentation Høfte 42 - a pesticide contaminated mega site in Denmark Thermal conductive heating Da Nang Airport, Vietnam – an alternative remediation approach Future perspectives

  3. Høfte 42 A pesticide contaminated mega site in Denmark SOIL TECHNOLOGIES

  4. Høfte 42, Western coast of Denmark Chemicals of concern: Current approach: Excavation, transport and treatment at external facility in Denmark and final disposal in Norway Estimated costs: EUR 33,6 M Parathion Methyl-parathion Malathion Mercury 250 tons

  5. Høfte 42, Western coast of Denmark • Sheets pile wall set up to prevent spreading of contaminants

  6. Thermal conductive heating SOIL TECHNOLOGIES

  7. Thermal Conductive heating Maiken Faurbye September 29th 2016

  8. Thermal Conductive heating Created steam and vapors captured by vertical and/or horizontal extraction screens. • Thermal conductivity does not vary significant from sand, silt and clay. The heat is therefore evenly distributed in the soil • The heating process is relatively slowly and therefore the distribution of heat is easy to manage Vapor cover Heater element inside steel pipe 500-800 ⁰C 500-800 ⁰C 100-350 ⁰C

  9. Mechanism • Vapor pressure increases exponentially with temperature • Once contaminants have been volatilized, they can readily be extracted as vapors Trichloroethene Perchloroethene Naphthalene PCBs (1242 – 1260) Mercury Dioxins Maiken Faurbye September 29th 2016

  10. Da Nang Airport, Vietnam An alternative remediation approach SOIL TECHNOLOGIES

  11. Background Dioxin contamination from Agent Orange US Agency for International Development (USAID) Environmental Assessment and evaluation of possible dioxin remediation technologies Most effective and best proven technology Lowest potential impact on human health and the environment Clean up criteria: 150 ng/kg TEQ Managed by USAID and the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense

  12. Project description Remediation of 90.000 m3 of contaminated soil and sediments Placed in an enclosed above-ground structure and heated at high temperatures Evaporation and extraction of herbicides, dioxin and hydrocarbons No offsite transport of soil Contracted by TerraThermInc, Krüger A/S, Veolia Water Technologies and TetraTech

  13. Da Nang, Vietnam

  14. Da Nang, Vietnam

  15. Future perspectives TITRE PRÉSENTATION / SOUS TITRE / DATE

  16. Future perspectives Highly toxic contaminated soil and sediment can be treated on-site Big potential for development of technology Pilot testing - design basis for a full scale remediation at Høfte 42 Grow experiences – reuse of knowledge at other mega sites in Europe
