  2. Answer Key A storm must have winds blowing at least 74 miles an hour to be classified as a hurricane. The eye of the hurricane is lines of clouds that spiral down toward the center. Hurricanes come from warm seas and moist winds of the tropics. A hurricane finally dies down when it moves over land or a cold area of the ocean where its supply of heat and moisture is cut off. Hurricanes formed in the western Pacific cause the most damage because they often batter heavily populated areas.

  3. Occur most often in central plains of U.S. • Funnel Cloud • Vacuum in center is destructive • Occur most often off Atlantic Ocean • Formed over warm water • “Eye” in center is peaceful • Strong winds • Rain, warm moist air • Occur in spring or summer • Occur anywhere in U.S. • Forms when warm air mass meets cold • Thunder and Lightning

  12. Today • Students will learn how to write a compare and contrast essay. • Breakdown the PCR • Pull evidence and explain it!

  13. Ok! Essay Time! We know we are writing to compare the point of view of the authors on the subject-penguin rescue mission. So, let’s have a basic structure in mind to help us organize our thoughts! This will just make life easier for us!

  14. What’s our Purpose? When we read we have a purpose and when we write we also must have a purpose. Let’s review our PCR so we can revisit our purpose. Write an essay explaining the similarities and differences in each source’s point of view about penguin rescue efforts after an oil spill. Support your essay with information from all THREE sources.

  15. Write an essay explaining the similarities and differences in each source’s point of view about penguin rescue efforts after an oil spill. Support your essay with information from all THREE sources. Let’s set up our paragraph structure. • Introduce what all the sources are about. • Source 1-point of view • Source 2-point of view and how it differs from 1 • Source 3-point of view and how it differs from 1 and 2 • Conclude and wrap up with something they all had in common. **Looks like roughly a five paragraph essay. There is no sentence limit for each paragraph-it has to be long enough to get the job done so DO NOT ask how many sentences you need for each paragraph!

  16. So, what were all the sources about? What happened? Where did it happen? We have to make sure we put key words in our intro so…what do you think would be a good intro for our essay? Paragraph 1. Introduce what all the sources are about. Write an essay explaining the similarities and differences in each article’s point of view about penguin rescue efforts after an oil spill. Support your essay with information from all THREE sources. *This answer becomes paragraph 1. It may only be a couple of sentences, but it introduces the point of our essay.

  17. Always think about the prompt: Write an essay explaining the similarities and differences in each source’s point of view about penguin rescue efforts after an oil spill. Support your essay with information from all THREE sources. Paragraph #1 - Possible Answer All three sources explained rescue efforts for penguins after an oil spill. They described the effects on the penguins as well as the people that helped rescue them.

  18. Paragraph 2. Source 1-point of view What is the the point of view? How does that affect us readers? What is the author’s perspective on the penguin rescue mission? *this becomes paragraph 2

  19. Always think about the prompt: Write an essay explaining the similarities and differences in each source’s point of view about penguin rescue efforts after an oil spill. Support your essay with information from all THREE sources. Paragraph #2 begins - Possible answer The article by deNapoli was written in first person. The author was asked to help train the rescue mission volunteers. This article helped the reader see what the rescue mission was like through her eyes. It described what it was like to go into the warehouse and hear how silent the penguins were and how hard it was to bathe all 20,000 birds. The pictures helped the reader to see what she was writing about. This article helped the reader understand how overwhelming the mission was. (this would be a great place to find evidence to support her perspective of being overwhelmed!)

  20. Look at notes to see where to find quote about being overwhelmed!

  21. We pull the quote and explain why it works! – Notice it explains how it is important!

  22. We can add our quote and our explanation to wrap up this paragraph. “I felt overwhelmed. My heart ached for the distressed birds. Cleaning them all seemed like an impossible task. But we had to carry on like doctors in an emergency room. There was no time for doubt.” My Explanation. This section helps us know how the author felt about the rescue. She was overwhelmed but determined to get the job done. This shows how important this work is to her.

  23. Always think about the prompt: Write an essay explaining the similarities and differences in each source’s point of view about penguin rescue efforts after an oil spill. Support your essay with information from all THREE sources. Now, put all that together for paragraph two! The article by deNapoli was written in first person. “I felt overwhelmed. My heart ached for the distressed birds. Cleaning them all seemed like an impossible task. But we had to carry on like doctors in an emergency room. There was no time for doubt.”This section helps us know how the author felt about the rescue. She was overwhelmed but determined to get the job done. This shows how important this work is to her.

  24. We will tackle Paragraphs 3-5 – next time!

  25. 3:15 – 3:20 Wrap Up! • Pack-Up • Office will announce: Car Riders – Leavearound 3:20 Bus Riders – Teacher walks out about 3:22 (listen to intercom-dismisses by grade)
