  1. Carnegie Mellon IRC and ##21315-213/18-243: Introduction to Computer Systems Instructor: Gregory Kesden Teaching Assistants: Eric Faust (efaust or EFAULT on IRC) Miray Kas

  2. Carnegie Mellon Quick Overview • The majority of the first lecture covered the syllabus, and is not rehashed here. • We did, however want to take a moment to talk about the IRC channel, especially for distance students.

  3. IRC and freenode.net Carnegie Mellon • Internet Relay Chat • Protocol from the late 80s. Still used today. • Freenode • A community of “Computer Science Types”. All (or at least most) channels are related in some way to computer related things. • The people are friendly and it's well run. We like it.

  4. ##213 Carnegie Mellon • Intended to provide accessible help for students who are either not on campus or, potentially (though with no guarantee) not during office hours. • Also contains other or old TAs, who may be helpful • Current staff have “Ops” (Green Circle in xChat) • Past staff are “Voiced” (Yellow Circle in xChat) • High Level help • You may need to come to office hours or email us directly to get more specific advice. • Remember, other people can read what you write • Be respectful, obviously • Please don't paste code segments. It can leak information to other students. If you have a code-related problem, you will be better served emailing the staff-list.

  5. How do I get on, anyway? Carnegie Mellon • We recommend xChat as a client, because it's easy to use, and works on both Windows and Linux • If you have another preference, or use Pidgin (which also has those characteristics), feel free • http://xchat.org/ For download and quick-start guide. • Connect to irc.freenode.net (Freenode on xChat's list), channel ##213 and enjoy. • If downloads aren't your thing, or you just want to get on from the cluster, you can also get on from their web portal, located at webchat.freenode.net
