Egyptians turn to French to help build the canal Suez Canal • Egyptian leader Isma’il continues to modernize Egypt (big debts) • Isma’il supports construction of a canal connecting the Mediterranean & Red Sea – less shipping distance • French & Egyptians borrow from British banks, can’t pay debt • British Government buys the debt & gains sphere of influence in Egypt – Britain gets control of canal when it opens in 1869 • British see the canal as the “lifeline of the empire” because it gives Britain quicker access to its colonies in Africa & Asia

Panama Canal • US wants to find a short cut between Atlantic & Pacific Oceans • A canal is proposed in the Columbian province of Panama • US offers Columbia $10 million for land – Columbia wants more • US encourages Panamanian people to rebel against Columbia • With help from US Navy, Panama gains independence, gives US free land to build & allows US to own the canal • US becomes known as “Colossus of the North” • Roosevelt Corollary (Big Stick Policy) is added to Monroe Doctrine, which allows US to be police of Western Hemisphere US “Big Stick” Policy
