  2. What is Conflict? Definition: When two or more people disagree or have different ideas on what they are to do. This can result in stress and/or tension.

  3. Types of Conflict • Interpersonal – breakdown in communication between two or more people • Structural – due to problems with the organization or how personnel are used in the organization • Facts/data – when one party has more information than another or the information is interpreted in a different way

  4. Definitions • Constructive conflict – behaviours that help build relationships, manage emotions, or accept and resolve conflict • Destructive conflict – tries to win no matter what, lacks respect for others, avoids conflict, and negatively expresses emotions • Escalate – to increase or intensify • De-escalate – to decrease and make less intense • Position – what you want (the ideal solution for one person) • Interest – why you want it (underlying reasons and unmet needs)

Using Self-Help • Reflect on the issue/concern • Raise the issue or concern in respectful manner and allow the other person to do the same • Allow the other person to clarify the issues or concerns to gain a better understanding of each other • Allow the other person to identify concerns and come up with a mutually agreeable solution • If the behaviour does not stop or the other person does not want to use self-help, bring with the issue with the UCCMA or immediate supervisor

Roles and Responsibilities in Dealing With Conflict • Resolve conflicts at the lowest level possible • Try interest based method first • Seek assistance through the chain of command • Seek further assistance if the result is not satisfactory • Undertake cadet training in managing conflict • Promote interest based approach (ADR) as a conflict management method

Things to Consider • What is the type of conflict? • Determine the scope of the situation: - Is it a single event or part of an ongoing conflict? - Are others impacted by this conflict? - Is the behavior unwelcome or offensive? - Do others need to be involved in the resolution? - Does the conflict impact the workplace? - Might this conflict be criminal? (if so, advise chain of command • Self-reflect: Am I the right person to manage this situation?

  13. Goals of the Collaborative Approach • Improving or repairing relationships by increasing understanding and decreasing tension between people • Developing solutions to issues that result in gains for each person • Provide people with the positive experience of conflict resolution
