Presentation summary Portfolio-based Language Assessment (PBLA) and the LearnIT2teach Projects are two settlement language training initiatives funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. This session will demonstrate PBLA resources in the Moodle-based LINC courseware, and it will show how the legacy courseware can be leveraged to support PBLA. Future plans for LearnIT2teach, including plans for IRCC’s national learning management system, will also be discussed. The LearnIT2teach is a project of Ottawa-based New Language Solutions Inc. The training and courseware is free for LINC teachers across Canada.

What is PBLA? • A classroom-based approach to language assessment aligned to the CLB and a fundamental part of the instructional cycle. • Uses learner-centered, competency/task based, community/school and work contexts. • A principled, systematic process to engage instructors and learners in a dialogueto tell the story of learners’ journeys in learning English and work contexts.

Key Features of a Portfolio Baseline Information at the beginning of the term including: • Needs assessment • Goal statement • CLB levels on entry to class/program • Autobiography Entries throughout the term for all 4 skill areas including: • Assessment tasks and skill-using activities with action-oriented feedback • Peer and self-assessments (based on criteria) • Learning reflections
