  1. Environmental Science

  2. SWALLOWED BY THE EARTH By Juan Carlo Castro The land has taken a thousand lives Brothers, sisters, husbands, wives Man and woman all the same None escaped nature’s claim

  3. What has brought his deadly force? We led it right through its course For when our Earth is do forsake Vengeance it shall undertake A soul for every tree cut; For every forest, a man’s lot. For when we let our world burn To us , it’s fate, nature returns

  4. Environmental Science • Is the study of the environment, the processes it undergoes, and the problems that arise generally from the interaction of humans with the environment

  5. It is an integration of many disciplines: • Chemistry • Biology • Physics • Hydrology • Geology • Meteorology

  6. Environmental concerns • Global warming • Air and water pollution • Hazardous wastes proliferation • Garbage problems • Depletion of biodiversity and other natural resources

  7. Environmental Scientist • THOMAS ROBERT MALTHUS- wrote in “An Essay on The Principle of Population” in 1798. His concern was not about population in itself but the fact that if it continues to grow, food supply would not be enough. • RACHEL CARSON- American scientist and writer who wrote “Silent Spring” • GARRETT HARDIN- American Ecologist published ”Tragedy of the Commons”

  8. Environmentalism- green politics Environmentalist-an individual who promotes environmental awareness and advocates for the protection of the environment. Environmental Scientist- is a specialist who studies, collects and analyzes data pertaining to the environmental conditions and problems.

  9. SOME TOOLS IN STUDYING ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Ecology-is a science which studies the relationship between humans and other organisms, and their environment. Oikos-house Logos-study Components: • Non-living- air, water, sunshine and soil • Living- animals, plants

  10. Ecosystem-a community of organisms within an area where matter cycles and energy flows. Components: • Biotic-living • Abiotic-nonliving Species-is made up of the same kind of organisms. Population- a group of inhabitants or individuals of the the same species in the ecosystem. Genetic diversity- individuals in a population that vary in size, shape and in some genetic make up, so they do not look the same. Biosphere- sphere of life.

  11. Atmosphere- is the layer of air which is further divided into different sub layers. Hydrosphere- sphere of water . Lithosphere- layer of the earth where soil is found. SOME ECOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES Law of tolerance- the population will thrive in a given ecosystem if the level of abiotic factors fall within the range of tolerance applicable to its individuals. Ex. A. Some individuals can tolerate longer exposure to sunlight. b. Higher tolerance of janitor fish to polluted river.

  12. Principle of limiting factor- there are abiotic factors , physical and chemical, which could limit the growth of a population. Examples of limiting factors: • Temperature • Sunshine • Amount of oxygen • Nutrients
