Powerful symbol of America’s economy • McDonald’s is responsible for 90% of the countries new jobs. • Today it has about 28 thousand restaurants worldwide and opens almost 2 thousand each year. • 1 out of 8 workers in the U.S. has at some point worked for McDonald’s. • Hires about one million people annually, more than any other company (private or public) • Largest buyer of beef, pork, and potatoes. • Largest retail owner in the world - Earns majority of profits from collecting rent. • Spends more money on advertising than any other brand. • A generation ago, ¾ of the money was used to buy food to prepare meals. Now, ½ the money is used to buy food, mainly at fast food restaurants.

  13. Control of American Agriculture • Have gained control of American agriculture • Farmers and ranchers are losing their independence and becoming hired hand for the giant business. • Immigrant worker injuries go unrecorded and uncompensated.

  14. Purchasing Power • Vast purchasing power because of demand • Have changed how cattle is raised, killed and processed. • Made a once highly skilled and highly paid job into the most dangerous job in the U.S.

Curry potato pie in Hong Kong • The basic thinking behind fast food has become the operating system of today's retail economy, wiping out small businesses, obliterating regional differences, and spreading identical stores throughout the country like a self-replicating code
