  4. The Unix/NT Environment (cont) • 130 SLAVE SERVERS • Sun Sparc Ultras. • HP, SGI, IBM. • 1400 + Client (I.e. RS6000, SPARCS, SGI, AUSPEX, NAC, HP) • Most versions of Unix (I.e. AIX, SOLARIS, SUNOS, IRIX, HP-UX).

  5. The Unix/NT Environment (cont) • 35+ NT 4.0 Servers. • 6 Exchange Servers. • NT SAN Infrastructure with 2 terabytes of data. • Total 9 terabytes of data on Full backups.

  9. The Problem • Large amount of clients per sub-net. • NACs NDMP protocol. • AUSPEX Fastback protocol. • Epoch backup conversion. • NT disk expansion. • Robotic unit expansion.

  10. The Solution • Started with NetBackup 1.7 and currently running 3.1.1 and 3.2. • Worked with Network Appliance and Veritas to be able to backup NACs using NDMP. • Working on a full fiber channel SAN environment for NT. • Worked with ATL on the latest DLT robotic units that are supported by NetBackup.

  12. Benefits • To be able to backup a Multi-Platform client environment, across multiple Computer Rooms. • To be able to work with state-of-the-art technology, that is supported by Veritas to accomplish backups and restores. • Managing backups and restores across the United States.

  13. 20/20 Hindsight • Maintain good vendor relationships. • Create a standard for backup hardware. • Maintain currency with technology changes. • Start with large RAID units for the Master’s database.

  14. 20/20 Hindsight • GOTCHAS • Need to be a primary beta tester for unsupported platforms. • Always call Veritas Tech Support for patches before doing an version upgrade.

  15. Plans for the Future • Complete upgrade to 3.2 across all masters. • Large install of NAC Servers running NDMP. • Backup installation of a 9 terabyte disk environment using a ATL P3000. • Install and configure Global Data Manager. • Work with Veritas to get single mail box restore on Exchange.

  16. Requests To VERITAS From the Motorola CE NetBackup Users Group • Patches to be available ON-LINE. • Notification of NetBackup Upgrades. • To be able to call VERITAS Tech Support and get support. • Work with VERITAS and MOTORLA and set a world-wide site license agreement.
