  1. I FORUMof Traders and Producers from Wholesale Markets of Central and Eastern Europe Analysis of fruit and vegetable market in Europe 28 May 2012

  2. Analysis of fruit and vegetable market in Europe Importance of fruit and vegetables in a diet • Fruit and vegetables are an important element of a healthy and balanced diet, both as a part of main meal and as a snack. • They are a source of vitamins, minerals, fibre and energy (mainly due to the content of sugar in fruit and vegetables). • Consumption of big amounts of fruit and vegetables decreases the risk of chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. I FORUM of Traders and Producers from Wholesale Markets of Central and Eastern Europe 28 May 2012

  3. Analysis of fruit and vegetable market in Europe Consumption recommendations • WHO recommends at least 400 g of fruit and vegetables a day, not taking into account potatoes and other tubers containing starch. • In Europe, the recommendations are different in different countries. Generally, they are in line with the WHO guidelines. In some countries, the recommendations are higher, e.g. 600 g a day in Denmark. • According to FAO, supplies of vegetables (except for potatoes and leguminous plants) increased in the last 40 years in Europe. • There is a gradient on the North-South line – in the north of Europe supply of vegetables is lower than in the south of Europe, e.g. • Finland – the average supply is 195 g per person per day, i.e. 71 kg per person annually • Greece – the average supply is 756 g per person per day, i.e. 276 kg per person annually.
