  1. Confidentiality “What does that mean to Peer Helpers?”

  2. Congratulations! Each of you have been selected to be a peer helper! This is an honor. Your teachers recognized in you: • A desire to help others. • Trustworthiness. • A well rounded student. • A positive attitude. • The ability to be a leader.

  3. Have you ever played the gossip game?

  4. The Gossip Game “PEER HELPERS MUST NOT GOSSIP” Game IS fun to play! Real Gossip IS NOT fun to the person that is being gossiped about!

  5. Code of Ethics • Did you know that every school counselor has to abide by a code of ethics? • A code of ethics means that we have rules that we must follow to protect the students that we work with. • Anytime you talk to a school counselor you are talking in confidence. That means that we are not allowed to discuss what you say to anyone else.

  6. But, would you feel safe in sharing with someone that you didn’t know for sure really cared? Of course not! This is why we have the code of ethics to protect you!

  7. “Exceptions to the Rule” What you say in here stays in here…..except….

  8. Exception #1 When someone is hurting you!

  9. Exception #2 If you plan on hurting someone else!

  10. Exception #3 If you plan to hurt yourself!

  11. Why is this important to you? As a peer helper you will be asked to sign an agreement to hold yourself to the same standards. This is important to the program so that you can develop a relationship with other students that will be productive in helping these students.

  12. Paper What happened to that paper once it was crumpled up?

  13. Trust is like a paper once it’s crumpled it can’t be perfect again

  14. “What confidentially means to each Peer Helper” Confidentially is one of the most important responsibilities of a peer helper. It is vital that you not repeat what has been said to you in confidence to anyone else,EXCEPT to your peer helper leaders. If you are given information that you are either uncertain about, or just uncomfortable with hearing you should come and tell your peer helper leaders immediately.

  15. Keeping a Confidence Keep Share • When no harm will come to the student sharing or to others. • When you are comfortable keeping the confidence. • When fellow students, friends, or even other adults ask you for information pertaining to another student. • When harm could come to someone. • When you are uncomfortable with information told to you. • When you feel that you do not know what to do with the information shared.
