  1. Welcome to Mrs. Manley’s Class 8th Grade Math Contact: manleyc@rcschools.net

  2. School-Wide Policies and Procedures

  3. LMS School-Wide Norms • Stand and Talk: Anytime that you are speaking, you should be standing. Remember that you should address your audience. If you are sharing with the class, face the majority of the class. Make eye contact when you speak. • Hallway: When walking down the hallway, we follow the rules of the road. Always walk on the right. • Agenda: Your agenda is your hall pass. You must have it signed by a teacher anytime you leave the classroom. You will fill out your agenda every class period during the last two minutes of class.

  4. Stand and Talk Why? • It’s our mission to prepare you for high school and beyond…whether that is college or into a career field. • What are soft skills, and why do I need them?

  5. Laptop Expectations • Carry the laptop with two, clean hands. Do not walk around the room with the laptop or use it by food or liquids. • Keep the laptop on a hard surface, not the floor where it could be damage. • Only go to the apps and websites approved by your teacher. • Gently return the laptop to its charging spot and carefully plug it back in. • DO NOT TAKE PICTURES OR VIDEOS WITHOUT PERMISSION. This can be an invasion of privacy issue. • Do not add or delete apps on the laptop. • Do not change the screensaver. • Do not share passwords. • NEVER SHUT DOWN LAPTOPS – only sign out.

  6. Technology • All technology (phones, earbuds, headphones, etc.) should be put away BEFORE entering a classroom. They should not be out on your desk if it is not a BYOD day.

  7. Retake/Redo Policy The ultimate goal is that you perform your best on your first attempt on any assignment, project, or assessment. Retakes (Assessments Only) • Parent must see the graded assessment • You must request permission to retake an assessment. • Retakes will only be during Advisory following the MASH schedule – Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies, Writing. • Must be completed within one week of receiving the graded assessment.

  8. Retake/Redo Policy Continued Redos (Class Assignments) • Students must request permission to redo. • Level 1 (missing 1-2 assignments): Complete at home. • Level 2 (missing 3 assignments): Complete during Advisory. • Level 3 (missing greater than 3 assignments): Assigned to ICU during Purpose and given 20 demerits. • Must be completed within 2 school days of receiving your graded paper.

  9. Discipline Path • Teacher Correction/Redirection • Parent Contact, Purpose Detention, 10 Demerits • Conference Requested, Grade Level Restriction, 30 Demerits • Dean Referral **While it is not a step, 20 demerits will be given each time you are signed to ICU.

  10. Hawk Redemption Opportunities • Early Morning Lab/Advisory • Score >80 is equal to 10 credits • Facility Clean Up • 1.5 hours is equal to 25 credits

  11. Codes Red – Stay in the classroom. Doors will be shut and locked. Remain completely silent Yellow – Stay in the classroom. Doors will be shut and locked. Continue instruction Green – All Clear Blue – Medical emergency. I am a first responder and will have to leave the room immediately. DO WHAT AN 8th GRADER IS EXPECTED TO DO FOR WHOMEVER IS COVERING MY CLASS.

  12. Who is Mrs. Manley???

  13. Why did I become a middle school math teacher? Easy question! I became a middle school math teacher because I never had a great math teacher. I want to be that teacher for you. I want to be the great math teacher I never had.

  14. This classroom is a community… • In our mathematical community, I am the mayor. You are the citizens. • As your mayor, it is my job to provide a vision for where our community is headed and support how we will get there. I will guide you and encourage you. • A community cannot function without responsible citizens. Your job as citizens is to take responsibility for your own learning.

  15. In this community, you will… • Be seen. • Have a voice. • Be respected. • Be loved.

  16. Things you will NOT do in my class this year… • Give up on yourself or others. • Make fun of another student for making a mistake. We respect mistakes in this classroom. • Quit.

  17. Things you will do in my class this year… • Believe in yourself and others. • Expect, respect, and inspect mistakes. • Have a growth mindset. • Be challenged. • Take risks. • Work together cooperatively.

  18. EMOTIONS YOU MAY EXPERIENCE IN MATH CLASS THIS YEAR…

  19. Math Norms for Discourse • Provide explanations and justifications for all answers. • Make sense of each other’s solutions. • Say when you don’t understand or don’t agree.

  20. FOV Schedule If you are finished with Hawk Mastery OR have scored 100s on both IXL assignments, embrace the Challenge problems on the board. You may do these on the BACK of Hawk Mastery or an additional sheet of paper. Doing nothing = Work Avoidance

  21. Assignment ScheduleGiven out Monday. Due Friday. Week 1 – Choice Board Students may choose to turn in Hawk Mastery consisting of 8-10 questions (questions will be only current or prior week’s standards) OR they can do 2 IXL lessons assigned by the teacher. Scores for IXL will be averaged into one grade. Week 2 – Choice Board Students may choose to turn in Hawk Mastery consisting of 8-10 questions (questions will be only current or prior week’s standards) OR they can do 2 IXL lessons assigned by the teacher. Scores for IXL will be averaged into one grade. Week 3 – Hawk Essentials Students will complete a Hawk Essentials assignment consisting of 12-14 questions. Some questions will be current standards and the other questions will be a review of ALL standards taught.

  22. Assignment ScheduleGiven out Monday. Due Friday. *Any week that we are going to take a CFA (“unit test”) we will do the Hawk Essentials assignment. *If you only do 1 IXL assignment then you only get 50% credit. Example: *If you complete Hawk Mastery and BOTH IXL lessons, then I will take the best score of the two. Hawk Mastery and IXL would be completed and submitted by the due date. *If you do not turn in Hawk Mastery on Friday, then I will be assuming that you are choosing the 2 IXL assignments as your grade (whether they are completed or not). That means there should be no missing assignments.

  23. Full Credit…This also shows there are multiple ways to arrive at solutions. Partial Credit Showing work helps me see what mistakes are being made. I can point them out and hopefully this will help eliminate them the next time. No Credit Correct answer but I’m not sure if you actually know it, guessed, or copied. I would rather you show your work or give an honest attempt no matter the difficulty. Just like in Sports…you practice to get better. Learn from your mistakes.

  24. Dismissal Procedures • You MUST remain in your seat until dismissed by the teacher. • 8th period – Seated until your dismissal bell unless you are sweeping or putting up chairs. • 8th period - If you are caught out of your classroom before you are supposed to be, you will receive a step.

  25. Food and Drinks in the Class… • Drinks and small snacks allowed (Why am I allowing this?) • If the snacks become a distraction and takes away from learning, then we will get rid of the snack policy. Likewise, if trash is left on the desks or floors or drinks are being spilled, we will get rid of the snack policy. • No snacks or drinks when laptops are out.

  26. Why is Math so Important? The skills learned in math are applicable to almost every activity we undertake. Prepares you for a career (businesses will hire math majors based on the presumption that students who are good at math have learned how to think) Develops good problem-solving skills (such as budgeting your money or understanding finances) Math is the same in every country It is an integral part of daily life. -What time to wake up for school/work -Knowing measurements to cook -Calculating the price with tax for a new pair of shoes -Realizing better deals mentally (20% off of $40 or 10% off of $35 ??) -Counting money to make sure Sonic gives us correct change -And so many more…

  27. Boosting Math Video…Words of Wisdom… Let’s do an activity!

  28. Take a look at your syllabus…
