  1. Bike and Pedestrian Educational Programs for Hillsborough County Elementary and Middle School Students, 2017-18 Led by St. Joseph’s Children’s Wellness and Safety CenterFunded by FDOT-Safe Routes to School

  2. Elementary School Programs Three On-Bike Clinic Tool Kits- Equipment and bikes supplied to conduct on-bike safety lessons for one week • All materials will be stored in 3 trailers that will be housed at HCPS Transportation Services.

  3. Tool Kit- St. Joseph’s Role: • Train all elementary PE teachers on Tool Kit usage at their PSD in August, 2017. • Pre-schedule 50 schools to use the 3 Tool Kits during the 2017-18 school year. • Coordinate the delivery of the trailers and supplies from Transportation Services to the schools. • Provide one staff member per school on Monday of the scheduled weeks to assist the PE teachers with set up and review training during a few classes. The PE teachers then conduct the lessons for the rest of the week.

  4. Tool Kit • Each class receives two lessons • Lesson one includes… 2. Correct procedure for stopping at stop signs 1. Proper helmet fitting instruction

  5. Tool Kit Lesson One 4. Proper way to cross the street at a crosswalk 3. Practice of stopping at an edge, looking L/R/L

  6. Tool Kit Lesson Two • Options Include… Extension Lesson 1: DVD and Egg Drop Demonstration Extension Lesson 2: Scanning, Signaling and Turning

  7. Elementary Schools • Walking School Bus: The Florida Safe Routes to School Walking School Bus Program is a statewide training program that teaches adults (parents, school staff, volunteers, etc.) how to implement a walking school bus (WSB) program in their community. St. Joseph’s Children’s Wellness and Safety Center can provide direction for those adults interested in beginning a Walking School Bus program at their school. We will attend the Hillsborough County PTA Programs Fair on May 13, 2017 as a vendor in order to introduce this opportunity to the PTAs.

  8. Middle School Programs • Program #1: TwoPre Driver’s Ed Bike Safety Clinic Tool Kits- Equipment and bikes supplied to conduct clinic lessons for 3 days • All materials will be stored in 2 trailers that are housed at the HCPS Transportation Services Depot.

Tool Kit- St. Joseph’s Role: • Train all middle school PE teachers on Tool Kit usage at their PSD in August, 2017, by SRTS grant manager, John Egberts. • Pre-schedule 20 schools which are losing unfunded busing for the 2017-18 school year. • Coordinate the delivery of the trailers and supplies from Transportation Services to the middle schools. • Provide two staff members per school to assist the PE teacher during the second and third day of the curriculum. • Note: 5 Transportation Services’ trainers will also be trained in both bike/ped clinic programs to provide assistance to elementary and middle school PE teachers.

  13. Middle School Programs • Program #2: Bike and Pedestrian Safety Presentation- • A one-day, interactive presentation which includes a power point with humorous and serious videos…

  16. This presentation is held during the PE period, “assembly” style in the gym.
