  1. WELCOME to Room 73 7th Grade Life Science Teacher – Mrs. Armstrong

The Teacher • Came to Alvarado from 21 years at Rincon Intermediate School • 25th year as a teacher • Before teaching worked as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist in hospital setting • I have Bachelor of Science degree in medical nutrition and a Masters degree in Education • Hobbies- Food TV/cooking, reading cookbooks & magazines, playing with our dogs & cat, spending time with my 11 year old daughter, husband &family

  3. The Class • Metrics & Scientific Method • The Cell and it’s parts and functions • Cell Division: Mitosis & Meiosis • Genetics & Heredity (Punnett Squares) • Biological Evolution/Change over time

Objectives:The Why & How • To help students develop the skills necessary for success in the Upper Grades, which includes, but is not limited to: study methods, critical thinking, social interaction, note taking & reading for information, focus on vocabulary, writing skills, inquiry. Lab skills and proper use of lab equipment is also taught. • Use of a variety of teaching tools: Foldables,Thinking maps, Cornell Notes, the iPad, Brain Pop, Learn 360, Color coding/highlighting, diagrams & charts, etc. • To teach science related mathematics. Ex. Metric conversion using decimal movement, scientific equations (l x w x h= Volume/cc, D= m/V)

The support material • CPO program and lab/activity equipment • Science Spiral Notebook • Helps organization skills • Don’t lose things (all in one place) • Can find easily • Can study more effectively for tests • Allows parents to review work being done • Brought to school every day • Is 20% of grade & graded for points at the end of each Unit. • The Required Classroom materials (highlighters, etc.)

The items needed • See giving tree at door • Hand sanitizer w/ pump top • Gift cards for Office supply stores, Home Depot &Target for various lab and classroom supplies • 5 letter size trays (9x12) plastic or metal • HP printer ink 60 black, 60 color • A roll of Green Painters Masking Tape • Heavy duty electric hole puncher- my old one is malfunctioning and barely works • THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
