  1. Bellwork #1:SW Gallery walk to take notes on OMAM and discuss their findings.SW view The Pursuit of Happiness apply his experience to the American Dream. • Write Gallery Walk for your bellwork, then take these notes under your unit notes.

  2. Bellwork #2:SW respond to an anticipatory set of questions for OMAM and discuss.SW critically read, interpret, and analyze Chapter 1 of OMAM with 3 column notes. • Write Anticipatory set- Respond to the handout given to you.

Bellwork #3:SW recap/review chpt. 1 of OMAM.SW critically read, interpret, and analyze chpt. 2 of OMAM and create 3 column notes with this chapter. • Create a double-bubble based upon George and Lennie. What are their similarities and differences. Find 5 similarities and 5 Differences on each side. Don’t forget your FOR and question.

  4. Bellwork #4:SW close and critically read an excerpt and apply the 4 square to it. • Write down 4 square set up under Bellwork: First side: What does it say? How does it say it? Second side: What does it mean? So..What does it mean to me?

And respond to their reading with a sentence stem.SW read, interpret, and analyze an AOW by T2T and connecting to OMAM. • Define Chris Gardner’s American Dream. • List 5 obstacles he has faced and overcame them. • What did he do to overcome them? • Do you think he will succeed? Why? • What characteristic does he have that you think is beneficial to him?

  6. Bellwork #6:SW divide into Lit. circles, while we read Chapt. 2 of OMAM they will be responsible for a specific task.SW share their finding with the group. • What evidence has been brought up so far in the novel that shows you that something is different with Lennie? Explain.

Read and write the following quotes down. Explain who said them, to whom, and what your interpretation is of them. • “Come on, ya big bastard. Get on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I’ll show ya you’s yella.” • “You know how the hands are, they just come in and gt their bunk and work a month, and then they quit and go out alone. Never seems to give a damn about nobody. It jus’ seems kinda funny a cuckoo like him and a smart little guy like you travelin’ together.”

When responding to a prompt, 3 things need to be present in your introduction: 1)Hook (Catchy Phrase or Situational) Quotes from important people (cited) Statistics from a source (cited) Creative catchy phrases ( don’t use clichés!)   22. Your Topic: How is the American Dream seen through the eyes of three different characters? The power even when it’s fruitless and the influences of living off the “fatta” of the land. Of Mice and Men is a novel about the American Dream. The American Dream is shown through many of the characters views and actions throughout the novel. I am going to tell you how it is seen through three characters views and actions. The failure of the American Dream can be seen through George’s, Crook’s, and Curley’s wife’s views and actions.

  23. "I remember when I was a little kid on my old man's chicken ranch. Had two brothers. They was always near me, always there. Used to sleep right in the same room, right in the same bed—all three. Had a strawberry patch. Had an alfalfa patch. Used to turn the chickens out in the alfalfa on a sunny morning” (36). George’s American Dream can be seen as simplistic and realistic, yet it still fails. The American Dream can be painted as the ideal house with the white picket fence, 2.5 kids, a dog, husband/wife, and the perfect life. It is unrealistic for people to believe they can obtain the perfect life, yet they still strive for it. This can be seen with many of the characters within Of Mice and Men. The failure of the American Dream can been seen through the views and actions of Lennie, Crooks, and Curley.

Body paragraphs: • Body paragraphs should follow the claim statement’s order. • For Example: The failure of the American Dream c be seen through the views and actions of George, Crooks, and Curley’s wife. • Then:Body 1: George’s American Dream Body 2:Crook’s American Dream Body 3: Curley’s American Dream • Also remember to use topic sentences: The failure of George’s American Dream can be seen through his views and actions. And Transition sentences: This failure can also be seen in Crooks’ life.

Take notes based upon the poster presentations around the room.

  28. SW apply their knowledge to a unit exam on OMAM. • No Bellwork- Use this time to look over your study guide before you turn it in.

Take out a lined piece of paper and fold it hamburger style. Label it: First side: What does it say? How does it say it? Second side: What does it mean? So..What does it mean to me?
