The guiding question here is “does the climate control the people or visa versa? So, what is climate?—once again from Dan’s perspective which he gathered from others. -Context -Atmosphere -Mood

John Stewart: A Spiritual Child Lloyd Bitzer: A Rhetorical Situation Some examples: -At the University of Oregon, Kent State and the Police “a rhetorical situation” -At St. James—a place for losers -The average home—what’s the climate?

  3. So, climate be controlled? • The text and I believe it can. • If we can create it, feel the results of it, why not change it? So . . . • How? The text suggests in two ways: • Confirming Messages: • -Recognition: letters, a call • -Acknowledgement: listening • -Endorsement: agreeing

Climate be controlled By: • Avoiding disconfirming messages: • -Impervious responses: not returning phone calls (cooling off times) • -Interrupting responses: cutting off • -Irrelevant responses: changing subjects • -Tangential responses: piggy backing • -Impersonal responses: abstract language • -Ambiguous responses: saying “I love you” and turning away at the same time” • -Incongruous responses: two messages • Can you think of other ways to change the climate?
