  1. IPT Patient Education Materials Models from TB and Other Public Health Initiatives

  2. Goal • Provide informational materials about IPT for patients and health care providers • To accompany piloting of new delivery models at the selected sites • 2 Pronged Distribution • Public locations • general awareness • Clinic based • specific, relevant, accurate, more detailed information • Pamphlets for patients, handouts for health care providers, posted charts in the clinic

  3. Existing Sources – Recommendations • CDC website suggestions for latent TB patient education • Explain the disease process and rationale for medication in the absence of symptoms or radiographic abnormalities. • Review the importance of completing treatment for LTBI. • Discuss possible side effects of LTBI medications • Discuss management of common side effects and the need to report to health care provider.

  4. Public Materials Purpose • image/visual based (rather than information heavy) • Emphasis on awareness, drawing attention, as opposed to educating with specific details • larger images for display in more public locations  (while I was in Mbabane there were HIV posters promoting condom use hanging on street lights) • These are the sorts of areas that could be targeted

  5. Examples of Public Materials • Existing poster format that could be inspiration for adapting and drafting IPT posters/flyers • Example from planned parenthood • Good visual dynamic • Cohesive use of color to separate messages • Allows for many points on a poster while visually pleasing and not appearing to clustered

  6. Public Materials Continued

  7. Clinic Based Materials • Pamphlets • Take home pamphlets for patients • Instructional pamphlets for health care providers/workers as well • Lots of health care providers might not know all the exact details of treating LTBI • Posters in clinic waiting rooms, bathrooms, exam rooms, pharmacy waiting area • More detailed and specific information about IPT, latent TB than public posters • Outline treatment protocols for health care workers • Outline adherence policies, benefits of IPT, reasons for taking IPT, side effects for patients

  8. Example of flyer that could be posted in various clinic areas

  9. Detailed Patient Information Form
