Summary: chapter 1 • “The man” told David that the electric fence would be switched off for 30 seconds to enable him to escape. • There would be a compass and water outside the fence. • David found a compass, water, bread, matches and a pocket knife. • Took some of the shepherds’ soup and bread.

  3. David got a lift to Salonica in the back of a van. • He remembered his friend, Johannes, and it seemed as if Johannes was with him. • David found a ship bound for Italy. • David stayed alive by drinking his water and wine he found on the ship.

  4. A sailor found him, but helped him escape overboard with a lifebelt. • When he reached the shore, David climbed a hill where he spent the night. • When he awoke, he was amazed by the beauty of the scenery that he saw before him. • David realised that he really wanted to live.
