Tips for Preparing for your First Long Distance Bike Tour

TV's science guy Bill Nye once said that, "bicycling is a big part of the future. It has to be. There's something wrong with a society that drives a car to work out in a gym," and we couldn't agree more -- especially when you consider how bicycling can also be a terrific way to explore other countries and cultures.

  1. Tips for Preparing for your First Long Distance Bike Tour TV's science guy Bill Nye once said that, "bicycling is a big part of the future. It has to be. There's something wrong with a society that drives a car to work out in a gym," and we couldn't agree more -- especially when you consider how bicycling can also be a terrific way to explore other countries and cultures. However, if you are considering leaving the comfort zone of familiar roads and trails around your home and opting for your first long distance bike tour you may wish to use the following tips. -Schedule a physical exam: First and foremost, consult with your doctor before you consider taking a bike ride of any length. Biking is generally one of the healthiest forms of exercise. However, certain individual may not be able to bike great distances or may have to modify how much they ride. Always check with your physician and follow his or her advice. -Find the right bike: During your tour of North America or Europe you may be spending 5-6 hours or more riding your bike. Make sure that you choose a bike that is comfortable and that fits your needs. You can best do so by trying out 4 or 5 bikes. Make sure that you choose one where you can sit at the right angle and height so that you are able to peddle for extended periods of time without experiencing discomfort. -Start training for your bike tour at least three months out: It's simple really - the more you bike before you start out on your tour the better off you will be once you are under way. Preparing early will also help you prevent injury and ensure that you will get the maximum cardiovascular benefit from biking. -Know some basic bicycle repair: Practice changing and inflating tires, adjusting derailleurs and other bike related tasks. In other words, be sure that you will be able to handle any minor emergency that may happen to your bike while you are on your tour. - Dress for long distance biking: When cycling it is best to dress in layers that can be removed as your body temperature or the temperature around you rises.

  2. We recommend polypropylene, light wool or other fabric that is breathable. Also, padded shorts may also make you more comfortable as you bike.
