  2. RLX Strategy…. • Worlds Best ServerBlades • Worlds Best Managed ServerBlades • Worlds Best ServerBlade Platform for Scale-out Solutions

  3. What does Scale-out mean? • “Scale-out”1 is a compute model. Simply stated, it means adding more full stand alone computers to achieve “more” computing or scaling. • Q: What compute applications or functions are most appropriate for Blade Servers (Scale-out) versus any existing Server? • A: Those that achieve large benefits or gains from very many servers in a condensed space. For example, • “Farms” of Homogeneous Web Servers • Compute Clusters • 1Note: Scale-out is in contrast to scale-up. Scale up means adding more processors (not full stand alone computers) to achieve compute scaling

  4. Target Markets • Web Serving • “IDC projects that the Web hosting will grow from $6.9B in 2001 to $18.9B in 2006, and that the ASP market will expand from $9.9B in 2001 to $22.7B in 2006.” • Bio-Sciences • The Bio Science Market will experience strong growth during the forecast period, from $10.4B in 2001 to nearly $38B in 2006 • Server revenue will increase from approximately $3B in 2001 to nearly $6B in 2006 • This lines up well with our product roadmap strategy regarding HPC

  5. Market Force In Our Target Markets Metric (ROIC): Revenue Return (sales) on invested capital (work) Solution Completer with superior market acceptance Go-to-Market ability – Take RLX to market Technology Gap Fillers for Product in our Target Markets1 Technology acquisition costs – rational Partner Engagement Level 0: Customer Integrates Level 1: Meet in Market/White Paper Level 2: RLX/Partner Integration Level 3: RLX/OEM Partners Solution Solutions Partner Selection Criteria Increasing Costs Level 0: Customer specific opportunities requiring RLX efforts Level 1: Self help and support kits offered by RLX/Partner (includes engineering/marketing documents) Level 2: Solutions offered/shipped/supported by RLX/Partner Level 3: Solutions offered/shipped/supported by RLX/OEM (includes SI’s/VAR’s and OEM customization gear)

  6. Solution Partnering • f5 Networks • No 2 WW market in Web Load Balancing (No. 1 is CISCO) • No 1 WW market in Layer 3-7 load balancing • Ensim • No. 1. Web hosting solution provider • Platform Computing • No 1 in commercial HPC

  8. Scale-out Web Server – Application Model - Load Balancing External Network (Internet) 1. Load balancing node receives URL request 4. Load balancing node responds to request Load Balancing Node Web Cluster 2. Load balancing node passes request to available web server node based on algorithm 3. Web server node processes request Web Server Node Web Server Node Web Server Node Web Server Node

  9. Scale-Out Cluster – Application Model - BLAST Searches1 External Network Jobs 1. BLAST searches are submitted to the cluster via the master node. 4. Master node combines results of individual searches to form the full search result. Blast Master Node Cluster Tasks Results 2. Master node divides the BLAST job into small pieces and sends these pieces to slave nodes for execution. 3. Search nodes execute assigned portions of the BLAST search and send results back to the master node. Search Node Search Node Search Node Search Node 1 Blast searches are a simplistic form of computational scale out. • No Inter-node messaging required • Data sets are local to each compute node • Highest performance if data set completely in RAM disk
