  1. "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it."- Michelangelo Buonarroti Setting and Reaching Goals Learning Targets: Gain skills/apply how to: Visualizing and setting goals Achieving goals Stating Goals Become motivated Overcome failure Long vs. short term goals Vocabulary: Visualize Long term goals Short term goals Motivate Intrinsic motivation Extrinsic motivation

  2. Visualization Helps! Close your eyes if you feel comfortable. If you prefer, keep your eyes open and let them close when you feel comfortable. Let’s take a few deep breaths. As you continue to breathe, try to imagine your future. This is the future that you want for yourself. Try to imagine how you would like to see your life.. . . . What are you doing?. . . . . . . . What type of life do you have?.... . . Give yourself the time and permission to really see the future that you want. . . . . . . . ** Write down: What did you visualize? What goals and future do you imagine for yourself??

  3. Tips to Set and Achieve Goals– Every Time! Specific Simple Significant Strategic Measurable Rational Tangible Time Manageable Written Shared Consistent with Values REFLECTED!!

  4. Stating Goals • It is helpful to do something you want to do instead of something you don’t want to do (e.g. ”I want to eat more vegetables” instead of “I don’t want to eat junk.”) • Make sure your goal is under YOUR control. For example, • you can ask other people or talk to other people, but you can’t control their actions. • If you do what you set out to do, you have reached your goal. However, other people may not behave the way you want them to.

  5. Break it Down! • Pick your goal and nail it down • Stating when, what, how much, where, and how • If it is a very large and general goal, break it down in to smaller attainable parts • Example: I am going to start exercising more. or Starting Monday, I will exercise 3 times a week.

  6. Celebrate Progress! • Why is it important to celebrate and reward yourself when you make progress towards your goal? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sshr8e3iQwc • Do you remember being rewarded as a child for making progress towards a goal? • If so, how did that make you feel? • Did that affect how hard you worked next time? ***Others may not recognize the positive steps we are taking, but we know how hard we have worked.

  7. Long Term vs. Short Term Goals • Long term: goals you hope to achieve next year or several years from now. • Ex) You want to graduate a University with honors. • Short term: goals that are reachable in the near future- the next hour, day, weeks. • Ex) You want to complete chores and homework early so you can hang out with friends this weekend ***You can have multiple short and long term goals at any given time, just don’t overwhelm yourself and make sure they are realistic and attainable!***

  8. Motivation Intrinsic and Extrinsic • Motivation: The general desire or willingness of someone to do something. • Intrinsic: motivation based on taking pleasure in an activity rather working towards an external reward • Extrinsic: when motivation comes from outside, such as performing for money or awards *** Set standards, (levels of achievement), to measure how you are doing in reaching your goals.

  9. Appreciating and Accepting Failure as a part of Reaching Goals “Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But yagotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!” -Rocky Balboahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmTxr7OsPj0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgW48mBQJ14&feature=related

  10. Take Home Message • To feel good, it is helpful to have daily reasons to enjoy life (pleasant, meaningful activities) and something to look forward to (short term and long term goals). • These are the best antidotes to the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness that are so common in depression. • They will also help you achieve emotional and physical health and a sense of satisfaction with life!  • Overcome your roadblocks and keep pushing through!!
