  1. The Effects of Stretching Before Exercise

  2. When should you stretch to avoid injury? • Every coach and trainer says something different. • According to some professionals, stretching before exercise will prevent an injury but others think the opposite.

  3. The Purpose • This investigation is trying to determine the impact that stretching before exercise has on our bodies

  4. Null Hypothesis: Stretching before exercising has no correlation with injury. • Alternative Hypothesis: Stretching before exercising has a direct correlation with injury.

  5. Methods • Interview coaches and athletes to determine their thought on stretching • Have the personal fitness and team sports gym classes change their normal routine • Students in the gym classes will be asked to complete a survey to determine the effects that changing their stretching routine has had on their bodies

  6. Progress

  7. For Stretching • Coach Hopper (boys basketball coach) • Stretches both dynamic and static; mostly dynamic • Started about 30 years ago and noticed that it prevents back strains • “the Guru’s new thought that you should only stretch after exercise is a bunch of crap”

  8. Against Stretching • Coach Chip (cross country coach) • Doesn’t ever stretch, strongly against it • Went to conference a few years ago and they said stretching was bad • Before the conference he stretched his athletes before practice • Didn’t really say why stretching was bad, he said that stretching cold muscles wasn’t good, but even if you did a warm up first it wasn’t beneficial; just said it is useless

  9. Somewhere in Between • Coach LeAnn (Gymnastics) • Stretching is important to prevent pulled muscles • Stretching cold muscles can be bad however, so warm up • Always thought you should hold stretches before practice for a long time but went to a meeting that showed you should only hold stretches for about 20 seconds before practices and then after practices you should hold them for longer • Can wear out muscles faster • Not entirely convinced that this new info. Is true, thinks it needs more proof

  10. In Conclusion • Not a significant enough difference to draw a conclusion • Surveys may have been biased, considering everyone has a different pain tolerance level • More research needs to be conducted
