  2. Program Goals 1. Develop radically new “machine translation” process and capability: DARPA Quick MT 2. Automatically retrieve information from total overload (10,000 communications and hour) of language sources e.g.: Web, audio broadcast, text documents, etc.: DARPA IDES Process 3. Develop a metrics-based evaluation framework used to enable experimental process and measure progress 4. Demonstrate relevance to military problem areas such as “detection and prevention of biological attack” 5. Develop new concepts of operation require multilingual capability, such as HA/DR/CM (Humanitarian Assistance / Disaster Relief / Consequence Management)

Prepare the way for technology transition. • Realistic Problems: PacTIDES Experiment for HA/DR in June ‘00 • Real Data: TIDES Portal pulling on real data from FBIS shown by June ‘00.

  7. Summary: Military Relevance Objectives • Longer - term Technical objectives : • Provide automatic language translation for selected material from Web, text, and audio sources. (Mandarin Chinese is focus in 2001) • Assist military and intelligence analysts with automatic extraction and filtering of information from language sources.
