  2. Opening Discussion • Name an organization or group in which you have been involved with. Do you feel there was effective leadership? Why or Why not? • Think for a brief moment and would like a few of you to share.

  3. Definition of Leadership • The ability to motivate individuals and groups to accomplish important goals. • When a manager can get employees to work well together to accomplish goals =effective leader

  4. Quotes • The manager asks how and when, the leader asks what and why. • Leaders grow, they are not made. • Leaders have followers, and managers have subordinates.

  5. Quotes • Leadership is the ability to do, not the ability to state. • The key to successful leadership today is influence, and not authority • Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he/she wants to do it.

  6. Quotes • Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. • Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them. • Whatever a leader does now, sets up what he or she does later. And there is always a later.

  9. Class discussion: • Identify people who have most of these leadership characteristics. • How do they demonstrate their leadership?

Assignment Create in Word or Excel a 3 column and 12 table. • In the first column, list the characteristics from the chart given in class. • In the middle column, describe things you have done (hobbies, work, projects, organizations) that give evidence of each leadership characteristics. • In the final column, list other things you can do in next 5 years to further develop your capabilities as a leader.

Management Theories • Theory X and Theory Y is created and developed by Douglas McGregor. • Theory X: The organization and management is authoritarian, and centralized control is retained • Theory Y: The management style is participative: Management involves employees in decision making, but retains power to implement decisions.
