  1. Our Reading Gladiator Journey!

  2. THE BOOKS WE have READ THIS YEAR ARE: We have enjoyed the variety of the books chosen for us this year and the different challenges that each text has given us. We have all extended our thinking and vocabulary this year.

  3. We have listed the books in order from our favourite to least favourite: 1. The Adventures of John Blake 2. The Secret Horses of Briar Hill 3. Strange Star 4. The Odyssey 5. Tamburlaine’s Elephants 6. Classic Poetry We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the challenges associated with each book. Here is what we have achieved this year:

  4. our entry for Secret horses of briar hillThis is on display in our upper school shared area We shared our ideas and each drew a part of the story or character that we felt represented the theme of the novel. It was great fun putting our montage together. We were runners up in this challenge.

  5. Our strange star entry. We loved dressing up to record our entry for the Strange Star challenge and then we showed it to the whole school during an assembly. This gave us the perfect opportunity to encourage everyone to read and to see what fun it is!

  6. Our classic poetry entryan image of us performing our poetry We performed our chosen poem in front of the whole school, recorded our performance and submitted our challenge.

  7. This is an image of us holding our prizes for our poetry entry We were delighted to receive our runners up prize and thanked our fellow pupils for being a fantastic audience too!

  8. Our Tamburlaine's elephants entrythis piece of artwork is on display in our upper school shared area

  9. We created a 3D map of Odysseus’ journey and included quotes to show how his character changed during the 11 years he was travelling. We split up into groups and worked on the different sections and then assembled the final piece for the mini-challenge. We are delighted to say we were Overall Winners and received a parcel of signed books, which we showed off in our Achievement Assembly. The books are now on our Reading Gladiator Bookshelf for everyone to enjoy. the odyssey entry

  10. The Adventuresof john blake The Adventures of John Blake was voted Reading Gladiator’s favourite book this year. We loved this interesting comic book because we were hooked by the first page. We were intrigued by the plot twists and constant suspense!

  11. Curriculum Links • Earlier this year, we used the Line of Fire (a Reading Gladiator book from 2017/18) as part of our Guided Reading in Year 6. This thought provoking book got us all thinking and linked brilliantly to our Remembrance Day assemblies too. • This year, we are going to donate The Odyssey to our Year 5 classes because they study this text during their Guided Reading sessions, we hope that they will enjoy being able to share the books.

  12. Promoting Our Reading Gladiator Books • Throughout the year, we have promoted reading within our school by: • reviewing all the books we have read and creating a display in our library • regularly highlighting the challenges we have undertaken during our assemblies to show that reading is fun • making and showing our school this PowerPoint • Adding to our Reading Gladiator Bookshelf with our books and the books we have won so that everyone can share and enjoy a variety of reading material • constantly encouraging our fellow pupils to read!

  13. Thank you for sharing our ReaDing Gladiator Journey with us. We hope that you will read some of the books we have recommended and discover a passion for reading that will stay with you for life! This power point was made by The Iver Village Junior School, Year 6 Reading Gladiator Group2019
