  1. Average Rate of Change Unit 1

  2. Average Rate of Change • Average rate of Change between any two points is the slope on the line through the two points Avg. Rate of Change of f from x1 to x2 f(x2) - f(x1) x2 – x1

  3. Find the A.R.O.C. • Find the average rate of change of f(x) = x3 – 3x from x1 to x2 • X1 = -2, x2 = 0 • f(x2) – f(x1) = x2 – x1 f(0) – f(-2) 0 - -2 Solve f(0) 03 – 3(0) 0 - 0 = 0 Solve f(-2) -23 – 3(-2) -8 + 6 = -2 Put back into formula 0 - -2 = 0 - -2 2 = 1 2

  4. Find the A.R.O.C. • Find the average rate of change of f(x) = from x1 to x2 • X1 = 2, x2 = 11 • f(x2) – f(x1) = x2 – x1 - x – 2 + 4 f(11) – f(2) = 11 - 2 = plug back in to formula 1 – 4 11- 2 Solve f(11) - 11 - 2 +4 • -3 + 4 = 1 Solve f(2)_ - 2 – 2 + 4 -0 + 4 = 4 = -3 = -1 9 3

  5. Find the average rate of change of the function form x1 to x2 • f(x) = ½ x2 ; x1 = 0 , x2 = 2
