  1. Instrument Families Instruments are grouped into 4 major families

  2. Brass Family • Brass instruments all share these characteristics • They are made of metal and have a brass finish • They all use a mouthpiece • They all use a piston valve system • Trombone uses a slide

  3. Brass Instruments • Trumpet • Trombone • French Horn • Baritone/Euphonium • Tuba

  4. Woodwind Family • Woodwind instruments were originally made of wood • They use a reed to create the sound • Reeds can be single or double (2 reeds back to back) • They use a metal key system • The flute does not use a reed

  5. Woodwind Instruments • Clarinet • Bass Clarinet • Flute • Piccolo • Saxophone (Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Baritone) • Oboe (double reed) • Bassoon (double reed)

  6. String Family • String instruments have a wooden body used as an acoustic chamber • They have a neck with a fret system • They use strings to create the sound • The strings can be strummed/plucked/bowed • some use an amplifier

  7. String Instruments • Violin Viola • Cello Double Bass • Harp • Piano • Guitar Acoustic/Electric/Bass • Mandolin • Banjo

  8. Percussion Family • Percussion instruments are played by hitting 2 things together (Cymbal) or hitting using hands/sticks • Some have a skin that goes on top of a wooden body (Snare Drum) • They are divided into 2 groups • Tuned/Non-tuned • Tuned means they can play different notes

  9. Tuned Percussion • Xylophone • Piano • Timpani • Marimba • Vibraphone • Bells

  10. Non-Tuned Percussion • Snare Drum • Bass Drum • Cymbals • Triangle • Claves • Tambourine
