  2. CONNECTION WITH THE TEXTBOOK • The topic “Mobile phone radiation and health” is related to the lecture 10/18 - 10/22 “Waves” • One type of wave can travel through a vacuum, e.g. electromagnetic radiation (including visible light, ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation, gamma rays, X-rays, and radio waves). • Cell phones use Radio Waves to carry signals for your cell phones.

  3. INTRODUCTION • Radio waves have different types, the longest wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. These waves can be longer than a football field or as short as a football. • Radio waves do more than just bring music to your radio. They also carry signals for your television and mobile phones. • Mobile phones also use radio waves to transmit information. These waves are much smaller that TV and FM radio waves.

  4. The History of Mobile Phone • The first handheld mobile phone was demonstrated by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing 2 kg (4.4 lb). Motorola released the first commercially available mobile phone, the DynaTAC 8000x, in 1983. In the year 1990, 12.4 million people worldwide had cellular subscriptions. By the end of 2009, less than 20 years later, the number of mobile cellular subscriptions worldwide reached approximately 4.6 billion, 370 times the 1990 number, penetrating the developing economies and reaching the bottom of the economic pyramid.

  5. The Effects of Mobile Phone On Human Health • Mobile phones use electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range, which some believe may be harmful to human health. • The WHO expects to make recommendations about mobile phones in 2010. Some national radiation advisory authorities have recommended measures to minimize exposure to their citizens as a precautionary approach.

  6. What does the recent study prove? • Many scientific studies have investigated possible health effects of mobile phone radiations. These studies are occasionally reviewed by some scientific committees to assess overall risks. • A recent assessment was published in 2007 by the European Commission Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR). It concludes that the three lines of evidence, viz. animal, in vitro, and epidemiological studies, indicate that "exposure to RF fields is unlikely to lead to an increase in cancer in humans."

  7. Phone Radiation Worries for Kids • A recent study published in the medical journal "The Lancet" claims that children who use mobile phones risk suffering memory loss, sleeping disorders and headaches. • Earlier this year, a British commission of experts pointed out that kids were likely to be more at risk than adults, and urged parents to limit kids' use of mobile phones as a precaution.

  8. How to Avoid Cell Phone Radiation • Headset - A headset is a cell phone accessory can significantly decrease radiation exposure to your brain. • Avoid Bluetooth and wireless - These cell phone accessories produce their own radiation in addition to the radiation produced by the cell phone. • Speakerphone - Use speaker phone as often as possible. Speakerphone also reduces the cell phone radiation exposure you will experience because you do not have to keep the cell phone near you. • Cell Phone Radiation Shielding Case - This can prevent radiation exposure while the phone is in your pocket or clipped to your belt.
