  2. Climate • Rich and fertile river valleys • Mild winters with long growing season • Were surplus farmers who were producing cash crops • Tenant Farmers-worked the land and paid rent to the owner

The Middle Colonies • The middle colonies unlike the other colonies had settlers from all different countries: • Europe • Germany • Holland • Sweden • Henry Hudson explored the waterway called the Hudson River. • The Dutch built a settlement called New Amsterdam. • New Amsterdam then became New York when it was attacked by the English. • The English also took New Sweden from the Dutch and called it New Jersey.

  4. People Groups • People came from Germany, Scotland & Ireland. (diverse population) • -Quakers (plain living, peaceful, against slavery and dancing) • -Germans (Pennsylvania Dutch- skilled workers and loved music). • -Scotch-Irish farmed and hunted. The Middle Colony Of Pennsylvania • William Penn a Quaker discovered Pennsylvania. • The Quakers had limited rights. • They did not belong to the Church of England. • They were peace loving people ( NO WAR). • Native Americans respected Penn for treating them as peaceful neighbors. • Penn was given land by King Charles II and Penn said this land would be used as a “FREE COLONY”. • Model of religious freedom, peace and Christian living

Life in the Middle Colonies • People lived on large farms far apart from each other. • Families home schooled their children. • The farms produced grains such as corn and wheat. • They were known as the “Breadbasket of America”.(Good farming land (grains), Livestock, rivers and hills.) • Raised a surplusso they could sell and trade

Interesting Facts about Middle Colonies • William Penn was also given Delaware by King Charles II • Lower counties of Pennsylvania broke away form colony of Delaware • Germans invented Pennsylvania rifle & Conestoga wagon. • -Philadelphia means brotherly love.
