  1. Miracles of Jesus

  2. Last Words • Before moving on to Jesus’ actions, lets take another look at his words. In this case, his final words. • Open your books to page 184.

  3. Purpose of Jesus’ Miracles • 1. They show how the Kingdom of God is present in him. • 2. They prove that he is the messiah. • 3. They confirm that he was sent by God the Father. • 4. They invite us to believe and strengthen our faith.

  4. Types of Miracles • 1. Physical Healings • 2. Nature Miracles • 3. Exorcisms • 4. Raisings from the dead • In all of these situations, Jesus reveals a problem and a solution and sometimes explains why he is doing it.

  5. Physical Healings • Jesus healed people of all kinds of diseases and disabilities. • A typical physical healing followed this pattern: • 1. Intro. Where the person approaches Jesus. • 2. Display of faith where the person begs Jesus for help. • 3. The person is cured by Jesus. • 4. The person returns to a healthy state. • 5. The other people react to the healing.

  6. Nature Miracles • Jesus constantly demonstrated mastery over the elements. • Nature miracles usually follow a similar pattern to healings but instead of just inspiring people to believe, they convey a message or teaching. • It is almost as if Jesus is acting out a parable for people to see.

  7. Exorcisms • An exorcism is the expulsion of an evil spirit that possesses a person, place, or object. • Exorcisms demonstrated Jesus’ ability of fighting evil as well as to reveal himself as having the power of God the Father. • Lastly, they reveal that Satan understands the purpose of Jesus even if humans do not and intends to stop him.

  8. Raising of the Dead • On several occasions, Jesus brings people who have died back to life. • This is intended mainly to show how Jesus himself will die and rise again AND that those who have faith in God and the teachings of Jesus will also be resurrected in Heaven upon their death.

  9. Reaction to Jesus’s Miracles • Many people still refused to believe Jesus. Many thought he was a magician or in fact had the power of Satan. • Even today, some people refuse to believe in God allowing the laws of the universe to be defied and that Jesus was simply a healer who was good at diagnosing people. (There were many healers in his time)

  10. Reaction to Miracles • In the end, Jesus’ miracles were unique when compared to other healers of his day. • 1. There is no record of anyone else performing such a wide range of works. • 2. He did not engage in any bizarre rituals to bring about cures like others did. • 3. He healed on his own authority with his own power. • 4. Lastly he did it for no pay and instead did it out of the goodness of his heart.

  11. Interpreting the Miracles • 1. Jesus’ miracles reveal God’s power. • 2. Jesus’ miracles are signs of God’s Kingdom. • In other words, God is directly intervening in the world. And he is directly fighting and conquering evil/sin. Lastly the emphasize the role of repentance because he is giving the world another chance.
