  1. Pre-participation Sports Physical Night – • Iowa City Community School District • Regina Education Center • In April • 7-12th graders

  2. History • Done since 1984 by community volunteers • Student numbers have declined over the years • Volunteers have pulled out for various reasons • Poor environment to conduct adequate physical exam • Used as substitute for medical home/ preventative care

  3. District demographics • Iowa City Community School District continues to grow and change • 11,400 students • 27% poverty • 4-7 % uninsured • 3 junior high schools • 2 traditional high schools • 1800 students • 1400 students

  4. Rationale • Convenience for students • Decreases school staff time needed to oversee that students obtain annual physical and return form • Opportunity for private practitioners, U of I, etc. to support school district

  5. Organization • District athletic trainers • Contact volunteers • Send information to schools, who then disseminate to students • Put information on website • Oversee actual event

  6. Volunteers • Parents • Community - RNs, MDs, NPs, PAs • U of I – Athletic training students • Orthopedics

  7. Number of exams given 2004-08

  8. Other options for PPEs • Healthy Kids Community Care school based health clinic – free medical care to uninsured, underinsured • Do 50+ additional pre-participation exams throughout the school year

  9. Limitations by exam area

  10. Pros/ Cons • Pros – • Convenience • Excellent ortho exam • May meet the needs for uninsured • Cons – • Not adequate physical exam?? • Is a substitute for primary care/ annual physical • Doesn’t qualify for non-interscholastic activities

  11. Ways to improve • Offer more comprehensive services in clinic setting • Thorough physical exam • Immunizations • Anticipatory guidance • Establish primary care/ medical home • Connect families with health care resources, i.e. hawk-i, medicaid

  12. What you can do to help us • Sports Medicine Department could offer free or low-cost pre-participation sports physical on a specific nights/ days in your clinics throughout the year • OR collaborate with Department of Pediatrics to do this
