  1. Physics ProjectHow to Be a Smart Consumer of Domestic Appliances? Group members: Carmen Ho (6) Yvonne Lee (13) Winnie So (24)

  2. Situation: • Family with 4 members • Living in Causeway Bay • Flat of 800 sq. feet • Air conditioner in the living room is out of order!

  3. TOP SELLER of the month $5980 $14500 $2650 $6680 $25600

  4. What is cooling capacity? • rated inBritish thermal units (BTU) • Definition of BTU:amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound (0.45 kg) of water 0.56 degrees Celsius • 1 BTU = 1,055 joules.

  5. Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) • EER= BTU / wattage • Higher EER => better cooling effect => more electricity conserving • BUT higher EER is accompanied by a higher price

  6. Calculation on EER 1)EER of Hitachi air-conditioner= 12630/1075 = 11.7 2)EER of LG air-conditioner = 9000/900 = 10 3)EER of Daikin air-conditioner = 24240/2600 = 9.32

  7. Estimation on Yearly Electricity Bill • Assuming that there are 30 days in a month and you only operate the air conditioner in Summer (i.e. four months a year)and six hours a day. • 1KWh=l kW x 1h = 1000W x 60 x 60s = 3.6 x 106J • It is also known that 1 BTU equals 1,055 joules • Given that 1kwhr of electricity cost $0.87 • 4 month x 30 days/month x 6 hr/day = 720 hrs • HITACHI air conditionerPower of the air conditioner= (12630x1055)/3.6x106=3.70 Energy consume per year:720x0.870=2664.93 Yearly Electricity Bill 0.87=$2308.5 • LG air conditioner Yearly Electricity Bill :$1652.13 • DAIKIN air conditioner Yearly Electricity Bill :$4449.7

  8. Range of Noise level of the air conditioners Noise Our ears will feel very comfortable

  9. Nano Titanium Air Purifying Filter • TiO2 and Ag to 3M High Air Flow Filter • fibres :highly ionized filter : zig-zag in shape-increase the filter’s surface area -minimize the air friction =>bacteria and odours are promptly eliminated, even up to 99.9%

  10. Digital Thermostats • thermistor : measure temperature • thermistor : a resistor whose electrical resistance changes with temperature • microcontroller :measure the resistance and convert that number to a temperature reading.

  11. A programmable digital thermostat

  12. UV-Fresh ultraviolet rays to powerfully eliminate trapped microbes. • three dimensional air flow • to ensure even distribution of wind.

  13. Energy Efficiency Labeling Scheme Aims: to save energy by informing potential customers of the product's level of energy consumption and efficiency rating Household appliances :refrigerators, room coolers, washing machines,…. Office equipment :photocopiers, multifunction devices, laser printers, LCD monitors and computers

  14. Grade 1 :most energy-efficient Grade 5: the least energy-efficient

  15. Air conditioner and environment • CFC -flammable -toxic -harmful to the ozon layer • NO CFC as refrigerant.
