  3. ICEFIL/HU/Windle International: Co-Creation For Innovative Learning Key Findings - Assessment Mission to Kakuma Refugee Camp (October 2016): Only 2% to 3% of eligible children have access to secondary schools. Situation is similar in other camps throughout Kenya and Tanzania i.e. At Kakuma, only 6,000 of the approximately 90,000 secondary school age children have access to secondary school education. Biggest impact (of this scarcity for education) are girls: While they represent 45% of school population in primary schools, they are less than 25% within Secondary schools and less than 10% in higher education. Most secondary schools run dual shifts to accommodate as many children as possible i.e. one starts at 6am and goes to 13h and then the other starts at 13h and goes till 19h. Immense scarcity of Teachers for Secondary schools with the average class to teachers ratio being 1:120 and sometimes as high as 1:150 children per class. Turnover in Teachers can reach as high as 45% in many of these schools hence further impacting the education of children at these schools. Most teachers (in these secondary schools) are refugees themselves hence lacking basic teaching skills and with only a high school education themselves. Most teachers in secondary schools have access to minimal secondary school course materials and hence only able to develop the very basic class materials.
