  1. Social Studies Agenda Objective: SWBAT compare and contrast the tenets of the Hindu and Sikh religions by creating graphic organizers from evidence given in a PowerPoint presentation. Linguistic Objective: Students will identify similarities and differences in Hinduism and Sikhism through speaking, listening, and writing.

Academic Vocabulary Tenets: important beliefs Scripture: writing from a Holy Book Subcontinent: large landmass that crashed into Asia creating India Eternal: forever, everlasting Polytheistic: belief in several gods Monotheistic: belief in one god Reincarnation: belief in returning to life more than once Salvation: the act of being saved Disciple: follower, student, in the religious sense Founder: person who begins an organization Unconditionally: without stopping, without regret or bias Turban: head covering

Hindu Beliefs Some Hindu gods and goddesses • Begun about 3,000 years ago on the Indian subcontinent, Hindus call their religion “Sanatana Dharma” meaning “Eternal Law”. • The goal of every follower of this polytheistic religion is to break the cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation to attain salvation. • The worship of 330 million gods, following the “dharma”, and committing good deeds will lead to that salvation.

Sikh Beliefs • Begun in India by Guru Nanak Dev in the late 1400’s, followers of Sikhism are monotheistic, believing in one god. • The definition of Sikh means “disciple of God”. • Nanak, the founder, taught that every Sikh should love and obey God unconditionally. • Sikh men are easily recognizable by their turbans, long beards, and silver arm bangle. Work Time Group One: From the evidence shared in the presentation, use the KWL graphic organizer to identify what you know, want to know, and have learned about both the Hindu and Sikh religions. Group Two: Utilize the two column t-chart to identify similarities and differences you have learned about in the Hindu and Sikh religions.

  7. Closing Group representatives will engage in sharing out to class peers all salient points discussed and mentioned on the graphic organizers.

  8. Homework SAN entry: On loose leaf, respond to the following: Identify 3-4 ways the religions of Hinduism and Sikhism are similar or different.
