If you’ve addressed it replace it and take a 1 stroke penalty failure to replace is a 2 stroke penalty If you haven’t addressed it If the ball was at rest after being marked and replaced, then moves, leave the ball where it comes to rest. Wind, rain & gravity are not outside agencies.

  12. Common Rules ViolationsImproving your line (rule 13) Do not flatten divots near your ball (before hitting) Do not fix a ball mark on the apron (if near your line) You can you bend or break a branch when “fairly taking your stance” Examples of “fairly taking your stance” take the “least invasive path” Sand and loose soil – can you remove?

  13. Common Rules Violations • Provisional – Can I hit my provisional a 2nd time? • You can play your provisional until you think you are at (or past) where you believe your original ball is “likely” to be. • Can I leave my ball as a backstop? • For my Partner – Not OKFor my Competitor – Not OK • Stewart Cink Ruling (regarding raking bunkers) • You can always rake a bunker that you have hit from regardless of whether your ball is still in it. • You are allowed to tidy up any bunker that your ball is not in, as long as it is not in the line between your ball and the hole.

  23. Stroke Play vs Match Play In Stroke Play, the general penalty is 2 strokes. Stroke Play Rules refer to “Competitor”. In Match Play, the general penalty is Loss of Hole. There are a few of situations where a 1 stroke penalty applies. In many situations where you are DQ’d in stroke play, you will only lose the hole in match play. Match Play Rules refer to “Opponent”. In Match Play there is no concept of “protecting the field”, since all parties are in the group. In Match Play you can “ignore” a rules violation if you choose, however you cannot agree to waive the rules.

  24. Stroke Play vs Match Play • Doubt as to procedure • Rule 3-3 (play 2 balls) applies to Stroke Play only • What is procedure in Match Play? A claim must be made before anyone tees off on next hole • Concessions – Match Play Concept • Cannot be declined or withdrawn • Can concede a shot, hole or match • Not allowed in stroke play • Practice • Stroke Play – you can’t play the course on game day • Match Play – you can play the course prior to the match

  25. Stroke Play vs Match Play • Information as to strokes taken • Stroke Play – the accurate score (strokes) must be known at the completion of each hole • Match Play – whenever asked or when taking a penalty and before opponent plays their next shot • Order of Play - Furthest from the hole should play first • Stroke Play – There is no penalty for playing out of order unless it is to give a competitor an advantage • Match Play – An opponent has the option to call a shot back if played out of order. If there are 2 players on a side the “side” away plays first – either partner may hit. • Playing outside tee area • Stroke Play – you must correct, or DQ • Match Play – Opponent has option to call the shot back

  26. Stroke Play vs Match Play • Ball hitting ball on green • Stroke Play – 2 stroke penalty • Match Play – no penalty, play ball as it lies • Ball hits opponent • Stroke play – play ball as it lies • Match play – option to replay • Ball moved by opponent / fellow competitor, but not during a search • Stroke Play – no penalty, replace ball • Match Play – Opponent is penalized 1 stroke, replace ball

  27. Stroke Play vs Match Play • Ignorance of rules • Stroke Play – penalties can be assessed later • Match Play – no penalty, but you can’t conspire to waive rule • Too many Clubs or Caddies, or illegal club • Stroke Play – 2 strokes / hole, maximum of 4 strokes • Match play – match adjusted for each hole violation occurred maximum of 2 hole adjustment • Mixing Match and Stroke Play • When can you do this?

  28. Golf Rules - Seminar • Topics to be covered • Common Rules Violations • “Phantom Rules” (people think they exist) • Rules of Thumb • Stroke Savers • Stroke versus Match Play - key differences • Q & A
