  19. Les Miserables: Themes- Love • In broad terms there are four regularly defined types of love: agape, philia, eros and storge. • Agape: The love of man for God or God for man. Example: Valjean’s love for God (Played down somewhat in the reader). • Philia: Brotherly love or friendship. Example: Enjolras and Marius. Eros: Romantic love. Example: Marius and Cosette. • Storge: The love between parents and their children. Example: Either Fantine or Valjean and Cosette.

  20. Les Miserables: Love Cont. • Valjean’s last line in the reader “There is nothing else that matters in this world except love.” is a sign that love is the focal topic of this work. • Valjean rescuing Cosette from the Thenardiers, and his subsequent love for her, gives his life meaning. The narrator remarks that “He had discovered the greatest joy he had ever known”. • This love for his adopted daughter is what compels him to risk his own life to save Marius later in the book, despite his hatred of him. He understands that his fatherly love will not always be enough for Cosette and ultimately puts her happiness above his own. In fact, his saving Marius’ life can be described as completely selfless. A trait often seen in parents.

  21. Les Miserables: Themes- Injustice • Fantine suffers a great deal in the book for doing something very human. She fell in love with a man who ultimately left her alone with a child. • While Fantine lost her job because she had a child out of wedlock, there were no repercussions for the father. She ended up having to sell her hair, teeth and body to support her child with no support from the father. Here Hugo highlights the inequality and unfairness of 19th century France. • Similarly, Valjean’s crime was stealing bread to feed his sister and her children. This resulted in Valjean being imprisoned for almost 20 years. He grew bitter, began to hate the world and was treated as a social outcast. • With Valjean, Hugo demonstrates how an individual convicted of a petty crime, even in a time of need, can be turned into a lifelong criminal.

  22. Les Miserables: Themes- Human Redemption and Grace • Hugo shows that a man can be condemned to a life of misery by a single misstep. However, he can be set on the right path again by a single act of grace. • The Bishop has the power to send Valjean back to prison. However, he lets him go with the silver, simply suggesting he make himself an honest man. Thus, Valjean’s path to redemption begins. • The clash of Javert’s ideology with the reality of who Jean Valjean is, represents one of the most important themes of the book. • Javert firmly believes that a criminal is always a criminal, he does not believe in redemption and he thinks the law should be followed to the letter. When Valjean saves his life, his entire belief system collapses and Javert decides he can no longer go on living.

  23. Tips for the Midterm • Try to answer fluently and on your own as much as possible. If you get stuck I will help you out with prompts, but don’t rely on being prompted as it reduces your fluency score. • Topic knowledge, will be an important marking criteria. Make sure to familiarise yourself with the topics in the book and the presentations before the midterm. • As always, the reader constitutes a part of your score. Make sure to read it and have a decent level of knowledge about the story and its themes.

  24. Review: Topic 1- Not What it Seems • Generally, how would you say you feel about advertisements? Would you like there to be fewer on TV? Do you use AdBlock on your browser? What about advertisements in public places? • What are practical jokes and pranks? When do people do these things to one another? • Broadly speaking, how do you feel about the media in your country? Do you feel it is mostly honest, mostly dishonest or something in between? • What skills do you think are important if one wishes to organise an event? What types of ways can an event be promoted? Have you ever had to promote or organise an event?

  25. Review: Topic 2- Follow the clues • Do you believe in ghosts or any other supernatural phenomena? If yes, what led you to believe in them? If not, why don’t you believe in them? • On the whole, what do you think about magic and magicians? Is it an interesting art or just trickery? Have you ever seen any impressive tricks? Would you like to learn some magic yourself? • Why do you think that we as a civilisation are so obsessed with crime and criminals? What about them do you think that people find interesting? • Have you ever had a friend or family member who did something you thought to be wrong? What did you do and how did they react? Would you want someone to intervene if you were doing something wrong?

  26. Review: Topic 3- The Mind • Generally, do you think that education encourages or inhibits creativity? How about in Serbia specifically? Justify your answers. • Would you say you have a good or bad memory? Do you often find yourself forgetting things? Do you find yourself going into a room and forgetting why? • If you could edit your own memories, would you do it? What types of things would you choose to erase? What types of things would you choose to remember better? • It is often said that “there is a fine line between genius and insanity”. Why do you think this is? Have most of the intelligent people you’ve met been eccentric?
