Genchem Lab 211 / 212 • The Genchem lab is part of the Genchem 211 / 212 general chemistry course • The grade received for the lab component is normalized to a class mean of 80 and integrated into the overall lecture grade • The lab grade constitutes 20% of the overall lecture grade • The lab course consists of 12 experiments (1 per week) • Each experiment requires a formal typewritten lab report prepared using a MS Word template downloaded from the class website: http://classweb.gmu.edu/jschorni/chem211lab or http://classweb.gmu.edu/jschorni/chem212lab • Preparation for the lab involves preparation of a “Prelab” report utilizing the “labreport Template” from the website. • The “Prelab” includes all information available from the resource materials available from the website, such as Title, Purpose, References, List of Procedures to be used, Procedure Descriptions, Proposed templates for reporting experimental results. See “Laboratory Handout” and Experiment Notes from the Website Lab reports are due at the beginning of the next lab (1 week) • Quizzes, covering the material from the previous week’s experiment are given at the beginning of each class • A final exam will be given at the end of the semester • The Department of Chemistry operates under a strict Honor Code policy • Students may discuss among themselves any and all laboratory resource materials at any time • Students are expected to independently prepare their own lab reports and may not discuss any aspect of the lab report preparation process at any time, except with the instructor. • Students are expected to dress appropriately for lab • Old, disposible clothing that could be exposed to chemical spills • No shorts, no open toed shoed • gloves (latex or nitrile are supplied), lab coate, goggles (recommen buying pair at bookstore, lowes, Home Depot)
