  2. Objectives • By the end of this presentation, you will be able to: • Define accountability • Determine strategies PE teachers can use to be accountable • Identify barriers to quality PE • Analyze and evaluate your own teaching Are YOU accountable?

  3. What is accountability? • Comprehensive process used to evaluate whether, and to what degree, all aspects of occupations, professionals, schools, and organizations meet standards of expectations. • National/State Standards

  4. Accountability Culture • We live in it! • Used to determine: • Funding • Employment • Other political decisions

  5. Examples of Accountability • No Child Left Behind Act 2001 • PSSA/Keystone Tests • Graduation Requirements • Are students learning/meeting standard?

  6. Accountability in PE? • “A math teacher might be reprimanded if too many students fail to understand basic multiplication, but nobody is held accountable if those same students can’t do a push-up.”

  7. Problems (it’s just “gym” class) • Great PE programs are a minority rather than a majority • “Roll out the ball” • Lack of support = don’t understand importance • Too busy focusing on NCLB • Teacher quality • Money (is this a good excuse?) • No mandated quantity for PE

  8. More Problems • Teachers are not held accountable! • No required tests • No reprimand if students are unhealthy or show no improvement • Fitness tests administered, but then what?

  10. A Physically Educated Person… • Learns skills to enjoy and have access to a variety of PA • Knows the benefits from involvement in PA • Participates regularly in PA • Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of fitness • Values physical activity and a healthy lifestyle

  11. What to Do? • Advocate/educate = students, teachers, administrators • Michelle Obama = Let’s Move!

  12. What Else Can We Do? • Take PE seriously! • Students don’t get away with just dressing • Need to participate at a high intensity level = HR • Constant fitness monitoring, not twice a year

  13. Heart Rate Monitors • Keep students accountable for fitness • Set goals for time in Target Heart Rate Zone • “Today, our goal is to stay in our target heart rate zone for 15 total minutes.” • Individualized, and a true measure of effort • DATA = program planning and evaluation

  15. After viewing the presentation, analyze and evaluate YOUR teaching using the following questions (no need to mail me your responses, just take time to reflect and critically think) • 1. What are the goals of your physical education program? (What do you want your students to learn from your class?) • 2. How are you accountable for the health of your students? • 3. What could you incorporate into your PE program in order to be more accountable? • 4. What do you think is the biggest barrier to student success in PE? How can we overcome this barrier?
