About me… • I studied French at The University of Nottingham for 4 years which included living in France and teaching in 2 primary schools. • I completed my Teacher Training at The University of East Anglia and have been teaching for 4 years. • I have recently moved from Year 2 to Year 1. • I am Maths Lead for the school. • I was a pupil here at Rushmere myself!

  5. Transition to Year 1 • We understand that you might be feeling anxious about the jump from Reception to Year 1. As a school we really understand the importance of keeping children confident and settled in their learning. • We are very receptive to the children’s emotions and will therefore adapt our timetable when required. • All lessons are interactive and engaging. Children are learning in a hands-on and engaging way. • In Year 1, we are beginning to work in a more formal way in line with national expectations. • Learning is accessed in a variety of ways in addition to classroom learning. For example: use of the secret garden, learning activities on the field and play-based tasks.

  9. Year 1 Homework – Celebrations Please complete a minimum of one task per half term, but of course you may complete as many of the tasks as you like. You can present your work in any way you wish. We look forward to seeing some of your amazing creations. Have fun!

  12. Maths End of Year 1 Expectations This booklet includes the end of year 1 expectations for children in our school based on the new National Curriculum. These are the minimum requirements your child must meet in order to be graded as working at ‘National Expectation.’ All the objectives will be worked on throughout the year and will be the focus of direct teaching. Any extra support you can provide in helping your children to achieve these is greatly valued. If you have any queries regarding the content of this booklet or want support in knowing how best to help your child please talk to your child’s teacher. Spoken Language

  14. Trips planned this year Please note: - Across the course of the school year, the school intends to increase the amount of trips for the children. Whilst the school will try to ensure that some of these trips will be free, some inevitably will require a parent contribution. The school is able to subsidise some of these trips, however, without your support we may have to reduce these down. Children will be given opportunities to carry out fundraising activities in order to bring the overall cost of trips down.   20. Photo Permission Conditions of use: • This form is valid for the period of time your child attends this school. Images of your child will not be used after this time. Please write to the school if you wish to withdraw consent at any time. • The images we take will be of activities that show the school and children in a positive light. • Embarrassing or distressing images will not be used. The images will not be associated with negative or sensitive issues. • We may use group or class photographs or footage with very general labels e.g. ‘science lesson’. • We will only use images of pupils who are suitably dressed. • We will make every effort to ensure that we do not allow images to be taken of any children for whom we do not have permission or who are ‘at risk’ or disallowed from having their photographs taken for legal or social reasons. • We will take all reasonable measures to ensure the images are used solely for the purposes for which they are intended. However we cannot guarantee this and take no responsibility for the way images are used by other websites or publishers or for any consequences arising from publication.   23. Clubs ‘School-run clubs’ brochure will be published online along with a online booking facility. External club providers will send out their letters separately.

Attitude to learning Attitude to learning FAQsWhy might there be a difference between the teacher’s and my child’s grading?[e.g Teacher grade higher than pupils grade] – This occurs generally with children who lack confidence. The child is unable to identify how good they are or the skills they have. Or pupil doesn’t fully understand the phrases included in the report [e.g Teachers grade lower than pupils grade]– This occurs generally with children who are overly confident. They may feel they are working hard when in fact their teacher may be aware that they can do so much better! Or pupil doesn’t fully understand the phrases included in the report. I don’t agree with the teachers grading! My child is a good learner at home!- This judgment is based on what the teachers see in school. If your child does show good learning skills at home, then it may be worth reminding your child that they need to show this in school. What score should my child be at?- As a school we are aiming for at least stage 6. This is the first time we have done this and so we have a number of children in the 3,4 and 5 section. Over time we hope to see this improve as we work with the children and help them to understand the importance of being a good learner. Children will also start to understand what is meant by each of the levels more and in turn be able to make a more accurate judgment of their own learning.

Attitude to learning Why? -To highlight to children that it will be their Attitude to Learning that will enable them to be successful in life, regardless of where they are academically. -A chance for those children who often struggle to receive recognition for commitment and dedication towards their leanring. -A kick up the bum for those who may be coasting… they’ll soon be catching you!

  29. Reporting Assessment & Progress • Three times a year parents will receive progress reports. • The report will show which of the four quadrants your child is working within. The aim to be working in the green quadrant, however some children may be working in the amber or red section.

  30. Read Write Inc Read Write Inc is a structured and systematic approach to teaching reading. We teach daily lessons. “It is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.” • Children are carefully assessed and taught in a group with other children who are learning exactly the same sounds. • They only read books during RWInc which contain sounds they have already been taught. • 100% success means they gain confidence and fluency quickly. • ‘Fred Frog’ helps the children learn and little rhymes and tricks keep it exciting!

  31. Writing Expectations • The next slide is an example of the level a child needs to be writing at to achieve the year group expected standard. • Standards have gone up nationally. • There is a greater focus on the technicalities : - punctuation, grammar, spelling etc
