Monday 15th January LI: Travelling to America on the Titanic Success Criteria I know that the Titanic is a ship. Because of previous learning, I know that the Pilgrims went to America for religious freedom. I understand that people travelled on the Titanic for a variety of reasons and some of those passengers were emigrating to live in a new country. I understand the push and pull factors for human settlement – particularly those around the time of the Titanic. I can identify countries and places on a map to identify the route the Titanic took. I can look at passengers of the Titanic and, using their class status, give reasons for their travel. I can use information to deduce why, throughout history, people have settled in America from other countries.
We are going to be exploring the Titanic as part of our Land of the Free topic.
Titanic • Titanic was a British passenger liner. • It was the largest ship of her time. • It carried over 2000 passengers and crew. • It was on its first voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. • It never arrived in the US. • Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15 1912 after hitting an iceberg. • 1,500 people died when Titanic sank • making it one of the worst ocean disasters in modern history. The Titanic was built in Belfast , Northern Ireland and then taken to Southampton, United Kingdom. Here 922 passengers boarded the ship on the 10th April 1912.
The ship travelled to Cherbourg , France, where a few passengers got off. In France, 274 passengers boarded the ship.
The Titanic then went to Queenstown, Ireland. Here approximately 120 people boarded the ship. It is estimated that 1320 passengers and 908 crew members were aboard the ship for the voyage to New York, USA.
Now look at eight of the passengers on the Titanic. Think about what class they were and why you think they were travelling on the ship.
Molly Brown was an American human-rights activist, philanthropist and actress who survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Brown and her husband moved to Denver, Colorado, after achieving great prosperity through the discovery of gold at one of his mines in 1893. While traveling in Europe, Brown got word that her grandson was ill, and subsequently booked a trip back to the United States on the RMS Titanic, famously surviving the ship's sinking. She was a first class passenger.
Mr William Albert Alexander was born in Flegg, Burgh, St Margaret near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England in the closing months of 1887. He was unemployed. William boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a third class passenger (ticket number 3474 which cost £7, 17s, 9d) and he was travelling to Albion, New York to live and find work. His sister Gertrude Jex had settled there in 1907 and lived with her husband and two children and his brothers Reginald and Albert 1 joined her in 1909 and 1910 respectively. It was his siblings who helped pay for his passage. William Alexander was lost in the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified.
Synopsis Cosmo Duff Gordon came from an aristocratic Scottish family and was one of the few male first-class passengers to survive the Titanic. Once Duff Gordon returned to England, he became the subject of ridicule. The press called his lifeboat the "money boat" after he noted that he paid crew members for their lost possessions, an action later viewed as a bribe to not return for other passengers It was business that led Sir Cosmo and Lady Lucy Duff Gordon to book passage on the Titanic in 1912. He was an Athlete.
Madeleine was 19 years old American and got married to a much older man. To escape all the publicity, they travelled to Europe for a very long honeymoon. When she became pregnant, the couple decided to go back to America. She survived the titanic but her husband died. Madeleine was travelling First Class.
Sidney Leslie Goodwin was born in Melksham, Wiltshire, England on 9 September 1910. Several of his father's siblings had emigrated to the USA and settled in Niagra, New York. His uncle Thomas Goodwin notified the family of a position for his father at the big power station at Niagra and plans were made for the family to settle there. Funds for travel were borrowed from several of his uncles and aunts. He was travelling third class. He was known as ‘the unknown child’ until 2008.
