Service Learning: • Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. • links the task or community service to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content

1) MCPS Indicators Specific Learning goals from MCPS curriculum that are integrated into the projects Examples: Fourth Grade: 1.4.8 Analyze data to identify trends and form conclusions 3.3.1.1Group related ideas and maintain a consistent focus throughout the writing process 2)Social Emotional Skills and Values Examples: Empathic skills: sensing what others are feeling Leadership Skills: Empowerment

3)Content/Classroom Activities Component where students are preparing and learning about their service projects Examples: Using the computer lab for research Brainstorming ideas in class 4)Support Activities Any outside support that helps the students learn more about their projects and to help understand reasons for service learning Examples: Classroom Guidance (Counselor) Guest speakers

LEARNING TO CARE : 1st Grade: The Children’s Inn Reflection: Students will complete an exit card after support activities and after hearing the speaker, as well as a Plus/Delta, in order to ensure and evaluate their level of understanding in helping this organization
