  1. COASTS AND SHORES IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS.

  2. Our seashores in Malta consist mainly of the following: • Flat sandy beaches • Rocky beaches • Shingle banks • Steep cliffs

  3. Ghadira Bay is the largest sandy beach on the island of Malta. It is also one of the most popular amongst its people mainly because of its shallow waters which are gently shelving. Slugs Bay is another sandy beach, measuring only a few meters in length. It is situated in an tiny inlet and thus is only possible to access by dinghy. A hike down is also possible but decent walking shoes are recommended.

  4. DWEJRA Dwejra is one of the two rocky coasts found in Gozo. It is an inland sea and its only access to the open sea is a sixty meter cave (tunnel). The Azure Window makes it a unique site in the world – this must have once been a cave which now eroded into an arch. This may, in time, become a stack.

  5. What About The Shingle Banks… Many small caves are found at sea level making this beach popular with snorkelers. The picture below shows Ħondoqir-Rummien, one of the very few shingle banks. Marsalforn and Shingle Beach are two other shingle banks in the Maltese Islands.

  6. …And The Cliffs? The Maltese Falcon once used to breed here. This species is now extinct on the Maltese Islands. Dingli cliffs These cliffs are the highest point of Malta. (300 m high). Ta’ Cenc cliffs

  8. Some facts about the Maltese islands & their coast. • The Maltese coastline is 272m long. • There are no mud flats. • We have very few shingle banks. • Cliffs are even found on the island on the three hills (Gozo).

  9. Glossary: Mudflats: Coastal wet lands that form when mud is deposited by the tides or rivers. They are found in sheltered areas such as bays and lagoons. Shingles: Small rounded pebbles that are found at certain beaches. Stack: A columnar shape away from the sea, which forms after the collapse of an arch. This is caused by erosion.
