Grades will be taken in comprehension, vocabulary skills, and various reading skills. • Math: We use Engage New York materials to help prepare your student for middle school math. In fifth grade, we spend a lot of time with decimals and fractions. Students must know their math facts to be successful in 5th grade. • Science: Our units will be on Earth’s systems, Living Systems, and the Structure and Function of Matter. • Social Studies: We will be learning about the 13 American Colonies, the American Revolution, Establishing a Nation, and the Civil War. • Language: The focus of fifth grade language arts is primarily grammar, spelling, and the writing process. We will write personal narratives, informational writing, research reports, poems, persuasive essays, and summaries. The student may choose to use printing or cursive, but it must be legible.

  8. 5th Grade Projects/Reports • 40 Book Challenge – To complete this challenge by the end of the year, students need to read about 1 book each week.
