    1. The Effects of Percocet, Lortab, and Acetaminophen on Brain Cells Danielle Neff Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology March 7, 2009

    2. Introduction The average use of prescription drugs has increased by 300 percent in the past decade (CAMH, 2006). Every year, abuse of illegal drugs contributes to the death of more than 100,000 Americans. Purpose: Learn the effects of narcotic drugs (Percocet, Lortab, and Acetaminophen) on brain cells and dendrites.

    3. Rationale/Hypotheses Rationale: Determine how the drugs effect the brain at the cellular level Lead to possible medicinal supplement Hypothesis: Cells treated with Percocet, Lortab, and Acetaminophen would show a significant difference in cell viability when compared to the control group. Null Hypothesis: Cells treated with Percocet, Lortab, and Acetaminophen would show no significant difference in cell viability when compared to the control group.

    4. Background Information Drug abuse kills brain cells and causes many problems when the brain tries to communicate the body and its organs. Abuse and addiction to illegal substances cost Americans almost half a trillion dollars a year, considering their combined medical, economic, criminal, and social impact. Addiction: is a chronic, relapsing brain diseases that are characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite the harmful consequences (Urell, 2005).

    5. Background Information Oxycodone is a central nervous system depressant that works through stimulating opioid receptors found in the central nervous system that activate responses ranging from analgesia to respiratory depression (Opiates, 1995). Hydrocodone is an effective antitussive or anti-cough agent, and as an opiate, it is also an effective analgesic for mild to moderate pain control. Acetaminophen is a drug used to reduce pain and fever, which belongs to the analgesic family. Neurons are cells which send and receive electro-chemical signals to and from the brain and nervous system (Than, 2005).
