  4. CRD’s Current Themes • Sustainable Agriculture (inc NRM), especially in Africa • Killer diseases – HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria • Climate change and the poor • Fragile states

  5. Strategy for Research on Sustainable Agriculture (2006-16) • Four elements: • Getting research into use • Regional programmes in Africa & Asia • Support to the CGIAR • Programmes with UK research councils • Funding to agriculture, fisheries and forestry to double by 2010

  6. Principles • Demand driven and supporting regional & national partners • Building capacity to do and use research • Partnership and harmonisation • Get research into use for impacts on growth and poverty reduction

  7. Support to Africa • Core funding to FARA • Support to Sub-regional Research Organisations (SRO) eg ASARECA, CORAF • Support to SADC to develop SRO for Southern Africa • Research Into Use Programme with CAADP • Support to networks such as FANRPAN

  8. Key messages • DFID is committed to supporting African led initiatives on research and development. • We want to see research making an impact on peoples lives. • We believe FANRPAN has the potential to make significant impact through getting good policy research undertaken and used.
