  2. Origins of Muncie • Muncie of Delaware County is about 50 miles from Indianapolis. • Delaware County got it’s name from the Delaware Indians. They came from Ohio to Indiana in 1770’s. • Munceetown, near present day Muncie was one of the Indian towns. • Muncie became a city in 1865. First Leaders in Muncie In 1830, I walked to Muncietown carrying “a small bundle of clothes, four law books, and $4.75 and began practicing law. I did pretty well! Served as legislator, Speaker of the House, Judge and Congressman. I died in 1879. Goldsmith Coffeen Gilbert is my name I am one of the founders of Muncie. I settled in Muncie in 1826 and purchased Hackley Reserve. I operated a trading post downtown & donated land so that Muncie could become a county seat. My name is Dr. Samual P. Anthony I am to the great town of Muncie In 1831 I was a businessman and doctor. I invested heavily in real estate. I died in 1876. I am David Kilgore’s son. I was the Mayor of Muncie from 1879-1881 I was a successful lawyer and Director of Chicago, Indiana & Eastern Railway. The Ball Family Contributes Greatly! • Began major business creating canning jars. • Financially contributed to starting of Ball State University, & Ball Hospital • Economically helped create jobs • In last ten years contributed to Cultural Development through Minnetrista Cultural Center and family mansions being used and more… Beneficence: Given to B.S.U in 1937 by the Ball Family.
