  1. BELLWORK • Did FDR’s New Deal programs get the U.S. out of the Great Depression? Why or why not? • What are some characteristics of a democratic government? • Define totalitarian. • THINKER: Imagine that you live in a totalitarian government: How would your rights be limited? As a citizen, what would you be forbidden to do?

  2. K-W-L • K-W-L is a brainstorming strategy used to activate your prior knowledge on a topic. • It also allows you to organize thoughts and questions before you learn. • K: What I know • W: What I want to know • L: What I learned • Today, you will be using this strategy in relation to government, people, and events during WWII.

  3. Before we start…… • Take a white slip of paper and write your favorite pizza topping • Only write ONE!! • I will explain what this is for a little later, so do NOT lose it!

  4. WWII: Types of Government • One of the main causes for WWII is the rise of totalitarian regimes and dictators. • Today, you are going to learn about all the types of government present in WWII • Democracy • Communism • Fascism • Nazism

  5. WWII Governments: Jigsaw Reading • The class is going to be broken into four groups • Each group is going to read about a specific type of government during WWII • You have 3 minutes to independently read this on your own. • Once everyone is finished, you will come together as a group and discuss your findings • Assign a leader of your group

  6. What pizza are you going to order? • Now that you are familiar on the characteristics of your government, each group is going to take the role of that specific regime. • The chosen leader becomes either the president or dictator of your government. • In your group, you must decide WHAT PIZZA ARE YOU GOING TO ORDER? • You must come to this conclusion based on the way your type of government makes decisions. • The catch: You can only have ONE topping on the ENTIRE pizza! • Be ready to discuss the decision making process!

  7. Discussion • One at a time, each group is going to tell the rest of the class about their decision making process. • Remember: speaker courtesy! • Describe the characteristics of your government. • What type of pizza did you decide to order? • How did you make this decision? • Was it difficult? Explain. • Do you think the majority of your group is happy with this decision? Why or why not?

  8. KWL Brainstorm • Now that you have learned about the types of government present during WWII, you are going to fill out the “L” portion of your worksheet. • What you learned • This is your exit ticket for the day!
