  3. 1. Introduction • The development of ICT has permeated the application of learning process, which is generally known as CAL. • A computer as a medium is used for the sake of facilitating people in learning, such as learning a language.

  4. The utilization of ICT in language learning mainly deal with the use of computer, other possible applications are: • Hypertext • CALL • Web-based learning

  9. ICT Tools and Utilisation in Education Context As a means to do or to achieve a certaingoal, technology seem to be an exhaustive source of handy and practical tools and gadget.

  10. What are kinds of technologies classified into ICT commonly used in language context? Interactive Multimedia Computer Audio Devices Internet Television Telephone and VoIP Mobile Gadget Social interface Interactive Whiteboard

  11. 1. Interactive Multimedia • Interactive multimedia is a technology which helps to accomodate two or more media such as text, graphic, audio, moving video, static video or animation.

  12. 2. Computer • Computer can be utilisedwith other multimedia learning devices or it can stand alone and serves its basic purpose as an electronic medium of language learning.

  13. 3. Audio Devices It can be used with other media to form an interactive multimedia.

  14. 4. Internet • Extensive and profitable use of internet as a medium of language learning is now being made by teacher & learners.

  15. 5. Television • The immediacy of current affairs programmes ensures that learners, exposure to the language is up-to-date to the real world of native speakers.

  16. 6. Telephone and VoIP • A more advanced application of telephone in supporting language learning is the use of VoIP.

  17. 7. Mobile gadget • Mobile gadget such as laptop, notebook, Iphone, Ipad are commonly used both by learners as well as teachers.

  18. 8. Social Interface • This media provides facility or example that enables an interaction between human and computer

  19. 9. Interactive Whiteboard Interactive whiteboard is a large interactive display which is connected to a computer and projector

  20. Current application in language learning • ICT is generally defined as technology functioning to support the process of conveying information and communication. In global era, the processes of conveying information doesn’t have to be carried out by direct interaction between communicator and communicant. With the development of ICT, the communicator and communicant can communicate through telephone, internet, email, satellite, television, video conference, and the like. • In certain context, ICT can also serve as a “teacher” or “tutor”. By utilizing specific software such as multimedia program, language learning program can be created to enable students to learn the lessons with guidance, instruction, information or further specific explanation for specific terms merged on the program.

  22. PRESENTATION Text-based materials and audio video or materials may be used to present or recycle new language to learners. Some ICT tools that are helpful in delivering presentation are : • Text -based material on the web or on CD-ROM : Lire Francais • Audio recording with supporting text on the web or CD-ROM : Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening Lab • Video-Recordings with supporting text on the web or CD-ROM : Funambule • Powerpoint presentations on an electronic whiteboard.

  23. PRACTICE A wide-range of different exercise types are possible to be provided with ICT, incorporating the presentation of stimuli in varying combination of text, audio and video format. ICT also offers the possibility of analyzing learners’ responses with appropriate feedback. Some ICT tools are helpful in facilitating a variety of language practice include : • Grammar exercises : CLEF ( computer-Assisted Learning Exercise for French) • Listen, repeat and compare : The TELL Consortium Encounters series of CD-ROMs • Automatic Speech Recognition : Auralog’s Tell Me More CD-ROM.
