  4. The Importance of Language • Children need to understand a wide variety of words that relate to Addition and subtraction that will support them in answering the following: • Word problems • Mental maths • Real life problems and experiences.

  5. What to look for • Number bonds • Children need to have secure knowledge of number bonds especially number bonds to 10! This will support their familiarity of number bonds to 20 and 100. • 8+2+16+4=30 79+21=100 • 10 20 90 10 • Doubles • 8+14+8+13 • 16

  6. What to look for • Larger number on top • Carry overs at the top

  7. Inverse Operations Addition and subtraction are inverse operations of each other. Children should use the opposite operation to check their answer is correct. e.g. 45+12= 57 57-12=45

  8. Things to Remember: • Organisation of work: aligning numbers • Larger number on top • Carry over’s: *At the top for subtraction *At the bottom for addition
