  1. Slander and Gossip 2 Deadly Sins

  2. How does God view Gossip? “A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech… continually sowing discord…” “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: …one who sows discord among brothers.” Proverbs 6:12-19

  3. What is Gossip? • Casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as being true. It is idle talk or rumor about the personal or private affairs of others. It has a reputation for the introduction of errors and variations into the information transmitted.

  4. What is Gossip? • Greek word: psithyrismos • “someone who is a whisperer, or someone that is secretly or openly slandering.”

  5. Common Misconceptions: • If it is true, than it isn’t gossip • I didn’t mean to hurt that person’s reputation, so I didn’t gossip

  6. Common Misconceptions:  "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.'17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. -Matt 18:15-17 • I don’t want to gossip, I just wanted to let you know (or thought you could help). • I would say this in front of them, so it’s not gossip.

  7. God on Gossip • “For lack of wood the fire goes out, And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down. “ Proverbs 26:20

  8. God on Gossip • “O LORD, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill? 2 He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. 3 He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend” Psalm 15:1-2

  9. God on Gossip “28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” Rom 1:28-32

  10. God on Gossip “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” • God will hold us accountable for our speech! • James 3:5-6 • Matthew 12:36-37

  11. God on Gossip Ephesians 4:29-31 • Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
